大西洋
大西洋是世界第二大洋，也是將東方歐洲、非洲和亞洲的“舊世界”，與西方北美和南美洲的“新世界”分隔開的主要分界線。
在探索時代，歐洲冒險家開始定期穿越大西洋，並發現了美洲的多片土地，隨後他們很快開始在此殖民。對於歐洲旅行者，穿越大西洋的航行至多只要六個星期，但卻可能因為各種極端狀況耗費數月時間，比如風暴、暈船和食物短缺。
歐洲人還會越過大西洋，將非洲奴隸運送到新世界的殖民地。對於奴隸們，航行可能會更糟，因為他們一直被關押在甲板之下，鎖著鐐銬，極少被允許外出呼吸新鮮空氣，他們每天只有一餐，還受到疾病的折磨。
北大西洋
