During the early 18th century, one of the island's beaches was the site of a fishing village. The town was almost entirely built on stilts, to protect it against high tides and storm surges.
Like other such settlements, it proved to be a popular resting place for pirates, possessing a harbormaster's station, a general store and a tavern, the "Crooked Island Canter". The pirate called Edward Kenway was known to have visited the village to accept two assassination contracts via pigeon coop.
