ACOD Xerxes' Sacrifice of the Nine

Xerxes' Sacrifice of the Nine

The Xerxes' Sacrifice of the Nine was a site west of Amphipolis in Makedonia, where King Xerxes I of Persia buried nine young boys and nine young girls alive. In addition, white horses were sacrificed by the Persian King before crossing the Strymon river with his army.

By the late 5th century BCE, the site was occupied by a detachment of Followers of Ares. During the Peloponnesian War, the site was visited by the Spartan misthios, Kassandra, who eliminated the Followers of Ares and recovered an Ainigmata Ostraka.[1]
