Wang was the leader of a group of pirates that operated in the East China Sea in the early 16th century, between the Ming Empire and Japan. Ships belonging to his crew were identified by their ashen-looking sails.

Wang counted both bandits and traders among his crew, and was a rival of the Japanese pirate Taki Choji. The two came into a mutual agreement, in which they would avoid interfering in each others' affairs. By 1526, however, the agreement was noted to be ending, and Wang and Choji both had involvement in a particular business, brewing an inevitable conflict of interest. However, this was put to an end when Choji and his crew were slaughtered by the Templar and Eight Tigers's leader Zhang Yong and the yuxiao Beelzebub he had brought with him.[1]
