Among his most famous works is the Aeneid, an epic telling the story of the wanderer Aeneas, whose travels take him from the shores of war-torn Troy to the troubled coasts of Italy, while plagued by the goddess Juno the whole way. The Aeneid strengthened the Romans during a period of transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.
During the Middle Ages, Virgil gained a reputation as a great sorcerer and predictor of the future. According to a legend, he placed a magical egg in the foundation of the Castel dell'Ovo in Naples to support it. As long the egg was intact, Naples would be spared destruction.
