DarkFeather
Hi again, it's Darman. Cruising through "Videos" and I'm finding a lot of videos that (1) are "gameplay walkthroughs" or unrelated to official promotional media, (2) aren't linked to anything, and (3) were uploaded by Users who haven't been here for some while. At least, according to my sample of 5 pgs. Since the site's devoted to AC lore, walkthroughs / help questions aren't really accepted here. Shouldn't these be deleted? I don't mean to seem like I'm requesting immediate removal, but I thought I should bring it up. You can reply on my talk pg if it's easier. --Darman (talk) 00:40, March 26, 2016 (UTC)

Hey, Darman, these have been discussed a lot. We are no longer maintaining walkthrough pages, but we don't really have a problem with linked videos. I'd point you to Assassin's Creed Wiki:Relevancy for more -- those walkthroughs are technically relevant, especially for folks interested in the series who don't have rigs that can play the games. As for videos that aren't linked to anything, feel free to make a category for them and I can review them. I hope this helps DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 19:09, March 28, 2016 (UTC)
Hi back. I tried to reach you on IRC, but while I was in the right time window, I just missed you each time. It's the unlinked videos by Users:[InsertName], who haven't edited since Dec. 2015, that I (and others? Unsure...) take issue with; I wasn't thinking of tampering with linked ones. If I read you right, I can create Category:Videos for Review for unlinked walkthroughs, and you / another Admin will review when you have time? Darman (talk) 22:09, March 28, 2016 (UTC)
Yep, that will work -- don't trust my away status. Just say hi and I'll respond ASAP in IRC. DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 15:46, March 29, 2016 (UTC)
OK. Just to clarify for the videos I've added so far: I'm not requesting deletion for all, just confused why they're here (hence "Review") but unlinked, even if from official channels like Ubisoft itself, IGN, &c. --Darman (02:55, March 30, 2016)
EDIT: If you have any questions on why I thought Video [InsertTitle] should be reviewed, just give me a shout. --Darman (03:21, March 30, 2016)
EDIT 2: DONE! So many videos... Most of them are unlinked, but there are 1) duplicates of official ones; 2) files we either don't have or I missed seeing them, e.g. the ACU Experience #4 vid; 3) files this Wiki doesn't have but feature in other-language ACWikis, even when they have their own copy of the file; 4) or ones I thought were really irrelevant to the wiki. I tried to categorize objectively, but you can overrule my decisions. There are other problematic videos I didn't touch, but that's another story for later. Thanks again for allowing me to do this. Good luck sorting them. Darman (talk) 05:24, April 17, 2016 (UTC)

I'm kinda confused on your decateogrizing. Why decategorize the Glyph videos? The User hasn't been here for 5 yrs, and the "Glyphs" page was already live when they made their page. Aren't the videos redundant? I don't mean to sound angry, I'm confused because I thought you'd understand why I added them. To hopefully clarify any potential future misunderstandings, I've organized the disputed videos in my Sandbox & tried to justify my decisions. Feel free to discuss on my talk pg if needed. Darman (talk) 00:46, May 12, 2016 (UTC)

So my general philosophy there has been that if they're in use then I don't have time to go back and handle all the deduplication in individual edits. I'll look through your Sandbox. DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 18:46, May 18, 2016 (UTC)

Bloodline Equivalents

Found the Bloodlines weapons' visual equivalents after wiki digging. Weapons are named exactly, e.g. "Yusuf's Turkish Kijil", and have different stats than their equivalent:

Here are better images than my forum post's video. I forget, did you say it was OK to use the main game weapon renders for these weapons? Darman (talk) 22:01, May 5, 2016 (UTC)

I think it would be until we get better renders. I'm going through the category for videos now. DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 17:26, May 8, 2016 (UTC)

Wait, "it would be OK", or "it would be best"? Slightly confused... Why better renders? The ACBL weapons are basically visually identical to the listed ACBH weapons, at least to me. Or is there a signif. render quality b/w AC2 & ACB? --Darman (talk) 01:56, May 9, 2016 (UTC)

It'd be OK -- best option would be to rip the renders directly from the source game. Barring that, if we can find the models in others, that works. Still cracking on your videos. DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 18:13, May 18, 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Slider

Hi DarkFeather, my name is Roranoa and I come from the One Piece wiki. Right now we're in the middle of redesigning our main page and we are trying to switch over from the traditional carousel slider to the slider like the one here on this wiki. That's easier said than done however. The code is very complex and we have no idea what to do, even our best coder who is a VSTF is stumped. We have most of the stuff for the slider planned out (content wise). Any chance you could please lend us a hand? :D My sig kind of broken right now so message me here [[1]] {{SUBST:User:Roranoa_Drake_II/sig2}} 21:02, July 24, 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Dark!

I would like to know your opinion about it: Thread:206794 (I'm talking to all Assassin's Creed wikis about it).

Best Regards! :) TheCreedX (talk) 17:49, July 28, 2016 (UTC)

Apparently, the majority has given its opinion, could you check, please? :) TheCreedX (talk) 00:34, August 3, 2016 (UTC)
Hey, DarkFeather! I left an answer in the thread, you could see, please? Thanks! TheCreedX (talk) 17:05, September 9, 2016 (UTC)

Background for MonoBook skin

Hey, I'm not sure who is responsible for updating the backgrounds for the wiki, but I've noticed that we have a custom of constantly changing it to reflect the newest main installment. This was done for Origins for the standard Wikia layout, but I actually use the older Monobook layout. I sometimes feel like I'm the only one who ever uses this skin, but it has gotten its background routinely updated as well seeing as it's currently of Syndicate. In any case, no one has updated the skin for the Monobook version of this site, and I'm not sure who normally does it, but I thought I might ask around. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 06:34, June 26, 2017 (UTC)

I need to do some updating of Portal tonight anyway, so I'll see what I can do bringing Monobook into the Origins era. DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 19:24, July 3, 2017 (UTC)

Ubisoft-partnered Origins redesign

Hey hey :) As Raylan13 mentioned to Master Sima Yi last month, FANDOM have partnered with Ubisoft to give AC wiki a main page redesign for the release of Origins. That mockup is now complete and received Ubisoft's approval yesterday. You can see it at our sandbox. While it's mostly feature complete over there, you will find the odd thing that will work better once it gets ported over here on the live wiki. In particular, there are some navigational elements that depend on the category tree that exists here but would be needlessly time-consuming to replicate on a sandbox wiki.

That's why we'd like to implement here over this weekend and then tweak it with your help. So please take a look and see if there are any major issues you have with it before we bring it over. Once we get it over here, you can look it over with a more detailed eye, and we can take your concerns back to the Ubisoft reps to negotiate the final, locked design.

Sound like a plan? -- CzechOut @fandom 21:50, November 3, 2017 (UTC)

I'm actually not OK with this. Your redesign is advertising-heavy and hides both usability and community elements that are currently present on our Wiki. You place advertising-like elements at the top of the page, and move navigation elements like the Portal below. You delegate our currently active community elements under the giant "BUY NOW" ad where they are likely to be missed and, from a UI perspective, are hard to use now from cramped space.
Portal was a UI project we started a long time ago to make navigating the Wiki easier. It or some equivalent should be at the top, as we have it now on our homepage, as it will see the most clicks from users. Below that, we should have exemplars of good community work and then community links so that people can get involved. Advertisements for purchase should be relegated to the sidebar where Wikia already places ads.
Moreover, we have not had a good experience with the Discussions element that you are pushing so hard. Our community came from IRC and we maintain a Discord-IRC bridge for our users. We would rather this be immediately visible to users on the homepage as it is now, rather than Discussions.
You're also not giving our community much time to provide input on this. This by far my biggest complaint -- we have an active community that is willing to provide feedback on these elements, and we should not railroad that community with a redesign they had no input on and is awash with more advertisements.
I appreciate the work you've done with the Portal Slider work that we've seen at other Wikias, like Dragon Age. I've been fighting with that code in what little free time I have ever since a Wikia update broke our ability to use closing div, td, tr, and table tags in the previous incarnation. I would be happy to help with the porting of the code, but please DO NOT overwrite our homepage with your draft without first securing community approval through our Forums. DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 03:55, November 4, 2017 (UTC)
To add to this I'm quite disappointed it took nearly a month to hear anything about this since the help was offered, and without any preliminary discussions about what features would be deemed most important by us before the design was created, we're presented with this new design and a notice that the plan is to go live with it over the weekend. I know that now is the opportunity for us to give feedback, but I would have much rather had the opportunity to discuss what kind of things we wanted help with or needed focus on, rather than having our entire current inferface reworked into something that has Ubisoft approval first, and ours second. -- Master Sima Yi Clogs 08:58, November 4, 2017 (UTC)
Not to jump down your throat or anything, but I'd like to add my two cents as well. I have no doubt that the coding is top-notch - that's really not my cup of tea, so I won't fight you on that front. That being said, I have some issues with lay-out and images - most of which could have been avoided if we'd been asked for input. For instance: under the header 'Main Series' you've placed a sub-header 'media' in which you've only listed the novels, comics and (short movies) - whereas most people would consider the games to be the 'Main Series.' Under this header, you've also placed development and events (in that order, which I also have issues with) - which don't really belong under the main series header at all, I'd argue.
Under 'Other Games' you've placed all the non-Origins games - yet you've chosen to use an image of a low-quality portable game - including the HUD. This basically goes against the entire image policy we've worked hard to establish on this wiki. The same could be said for the low-res image you've chosen to use for the 'Admin' sub-header: it looks fine when it's just the little thing, but when you click it and it enlarges to form the background, it becomes grainy and ugly.
Then we come to the header 'Books and Comics' - even though the majority of these were already listed under 'Main Series,' as I've mentioned above. I get that, under this subheader, our categories would be displayed, but it's still a little double, wouldn't you say?
I don't want to sound ungrateful - because I have no doubt a lot of work went into this project. That being said, a lot of it would need to be redone if it wants to live up to our standards. --Amnestyyy (Contact me!) @fandom 16:04, November 4, 2017 (UTC)
Thanks everyone for your feedback.  :) I'd like to respond first by saying that we sincerely apologise for the gap between announcing there was going to be an Ubisoft partnership and being able to present you a finished design.
That was not intentional.
When we work with partners like Ubisoft, it's a back-and-forth process that can take time. There are always several entities involved. And the process is never the same. How we proceed -- whether we start first with the community or the production company -- simply depends on the particular dynamics of each project. This time, it just took longer than we were expecting. It was in no way an attempt to railroad something through. You were notified within mere hours of getting approval from Ubisoft.
We want you to understand that "getting approval form Ubisoft" doesn't mean "it must be precisely this way". You still have a great deal of wiggle room in moulding this design to your liking. If you don't like the slider at the very top you could change it so that it navigated people to places you wanted them to go.
You can also change other things.
For instance, virtually all of Amnestyyy's comments can be taken on board here. We're not wed to the particular graphics being used on the navigational array. If you guys dislike the images, we can certainly change them out. And if you don't like exactly what's in the navigation, we can work on that, too. It was always expected that you would offer suggestions of what to put in these navigational arrays.
By all means, tell me what exactly you would like in the navigational array. Lead me by the nose to the specific images you'd like to see there. Explain why the contents of Template:Portal/Series do not belong under the new tab "Main Series". I have no problem changing any of that content to better suit your needs.
And sure: let's make sure the right social connections are there. The design does have a Discord instance near the top of the right rail. So it's pretty prominent. But it doesn't have anything about IRC. Let's consider adding a module for IRC, if it's important to all of you. We can even dump that Origins ad in the top of the right rail, to bring the Discord link all the way to the top.
However, I would point out that you actually do have a thriving Discussions instance with 1000 posts as of today. Compared with other wikis, that represents a clearly active Discussions instance. Still, if you'd like, we could probably consider swapping the discussions module and the help module. That would give the text in the Help area room to breathe.
In short, we're absolutely happy to modify the design to accommodate your feedback, but we would love to work quickly since Origins is already out and we'd love to provide this new experience for all of the new fans visiting the wiki. It would be better to put this up now and tweak it over the next few days while it's live than to wait until it's perfect.
Toward that end, in the next few hours, I'm going to put it up at Portal:Origins main page. I'll get the basic framework (CSS/JS) in place. We can then look at it "for real", in this environment. You can have some time to give me a long and detailed list of the things you'd like to change! Then, by tomorrow, we can move it to the front page and continue tweaking the rest of the week until we get it just how you like it! -- CzechOut @fandom 22:16, November 6, 2017 (UTC)
Hey again, guys :)
Just wanted to stop by again and tell you that I've spent several hours trying to provide you with a working mock of the redesign on this wiki at Portal:Origins main page. It turned out to be a more complex project than I imagined, but I think we're able to have a much more realistic view of things now. We can now judge whether the use of categorytree actually worked, or whether we might need to find a number of new pages that we explicitly add to the navigation panels. Personally, I think the category tree does an okay job as a placeholder, but ultimately Amnestyyy's points are well-made. I think we do want to find pages, partiularly for the Origins panel and replace the use of categorytree over this week.
I think, too, that having actual blog and Discussions posts fills out the page quite nicely, in a way you can't really simulate well on a sandbox wiki. You guys have a lot of activity in those two areas, and this new design showcases them well.
Please do take some time today to take a look at things over at Portal:Origins main page so that I can begin to integrate your suggestions as I move the design over to the main page. And don't worry: we're gonna stick with you for this week (at least!) in continuing to shape the design even after it's been moved! Note that we've already started in this direction by completely removing the "buy now" element, and thereby moving the Discord element to the prominent top of the right rail. Also, the Featured Article module uses your current content in an only slightly reformatted way. So now when you reload the page, you get a different article each time. -- CzechOut @fandom 05:50, November 7, 2017 (UTC)
Please slow down. This is not ready for the main page. We are still seeing multiple portals on your home page, your Discord image is a fake-out to the Ubisoft advertising page for Origins rather than to our Discord, you have no link to our extant Forums, etc. In fact, next to none of my, Sima's, or Nesty's feedback has been addressed and in fact the removal of a Forums link makes it worse.
I get that you see a lot of activity on Discussions, but we have had acres of trouble keeping that content relevant to the Wiki and of sufficient quality. We've had to ban a number of users over mis-use of that tool, and we've been seriously considering blocking the functionality. Please DO NOT try to force a replacement of our exisiting Forums with this new Discussions tool.
Your most apt element to move to the Main Page is the second portal, which is nicely graphically designed and sufficiently Origins-themed. I believe we can bring that element alone to the main page and leave the rest alone. You have a couple usability elements that need some help (the back button needs to not fade away and hide, the Comics section runs over, etc.), and we need to get the category detection to work correctly. Technically, this element is good to ship and I think we can port the static links from the existing Portal into it. Thank you for your work on this element.
Please DO NOT overwrite our existing home-page without a community vote on Forums and without discussing it with our leadership at Discord. This is the second time that we are getting next to no notice and a "this'll be fine -- we can tweak later" response. This is our home-page -- it's the first experience new people have with the site and it's a go-to toolset for existing users. It's not as easy to change as our other pages. DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 15:09, November 7, 2017 (UTC)
I want to really let you know that we all appreciate the help on this revamp, but I was under the impression that after I got the message from Raylan that Ubisoft supplied us with assets for our main page they would be offered to us for implementation as we see fit, and that we'd actually have discussions on any further help Wikia would provide to us before a completely new page was created. I see that this main page is similar to that of Mass Effect Wiki and that this is therefore probably Fandom's prefered main page design, but even then I feel that our feedback is most important for any content that is on this wiki, because it's us that actually contribute all the content and we know our little sub-community best. And I want to once again reiterate that I'm glad for any help we are offered, but I feel like our feedback and wishes aren't really taking top priority here.
Can we instead engage in a two-sided conversation first to decide what is best for the main page? I want both parties to be pleased in this matter, but I don't feel that can happen if this new page gets implemented despite our objections. And I don't want to be "that wiki" that's such a trouble for Fandom staff, but I also want to feel like our wishes our respected. We all do this voluntarily after all, so I feel like that's most essential.
We've voiced our objections towards replacing Discussions with Forums as long as we can. We are aware that eventually it's Wikia's idea to replace Discussions with Forums entirely, but as is we are not satisfied with how Discussions functions and have had a large number of users who do not know how to follow the rules. We do not want this feature to be our go-to discussion platform as yet. I personally have no objections with having it on the main page, but only alongside the Forums. I further refer to DarkFeather's feedback on the matter. -- Master Sima Yi Clogs 15:35, November 7, 2017 (UTC)

Yes, I had realized the layout had been accidentally messed up because of my edits, and after noticing you had to revert those I tried once again to apply the new Era tags, but that messed up too. I'll let you know how the new cells look. --Piero.schiavone1994 (talk) 12:18, January 8, 2019 (UTC)

Sorry my nested tables caused a mess. I didn't mean for it to be jarring, but it was the only way I could think of then. But as all the achievements have different reward quantities for each tier, with 3–5 levels each, what would you recommend we do? Give every tier its own box? -- Darman (talk) 20:12, January 8, 2019 (UTC)

Color-blind friendly editing

Hi DarkFeather,

I was told by Sol Pacificus that you were familiar with coding and might be able to help with a particular issue I've encountered while editing articles.

I've noticed that when double-checking changes from the previous version of an article, the colors used for highlighting differences in the previous version (brown text on red background), is very difficult to read for someone who is red-green color blind. Would it be possible to change these to something more discernible for us color blind folks out there?

Thanks. --Bluerock (talk) 10:39, August 25, 2019 (UTC)

Hey, Bluerock -- this is possible, in theory, but we have been having our color palettes dictated by Fandom and Ubi. I can look to see if any of the changes they've pushed have affected the KDiff3 output. DarkFeather Raven's NestRaven's Hunt 05:11, August 26, 2019 (UTC)
