AC3 Stone Tomahawk

A stone tomahawk

Tomahawks are a type of one-handed axe, which were most effective when wielded in close combat. They were commonly used by Native Americans, as well as European colonists. They are still in use today, primarily by special operations groups, or by any outdoorsman, as they are useful tools as well as weapons.

The tomahawk could be used for stealth kills, melee combat, or to perform menial tasks, such as cutting a rope or traversing ziplines, in a similar manner to the Hookblade.

The Assassin Tomahawk was a uniquely designed weapon, with an axe-head closely resembling the Assassin insignia, that originally belonged to John de la Tour, the first Assassin who arrived in the American Colonies. Kesegowaase, a Wolastoqiyik member of the Colonial Brotherhood, used a tomahawk in combat during the Seven Years' War.[1] During the American Revolution, the Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton used various tomahawks in combat, often dual-wielding the weapon alongside his Hidden Blade.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Other short weapons share the same combat animations as tomahawks.
  • In a SacAnime 2014 panel at Sacramento, California, Noah Watts mentioned he often asked Ubisoft if Connor could throw his tomahawk at enemies in Assassin's Creed III, but the animation team said it would be too hard to render and mo-cap. By the time the three-part downloadable expansion released its third and final chapter "The Redemption" in 2013, a cutscene in the memory "Dark Waters" had Kanen'tó:kon throw a tomahawk at an American guard.[3]
  • When Shay Cormac battled Kesegowaase during the memory "Scars", he could disarm Kesegowaase, but he would pick up a sword instead of his tomahawk. Shay also could not retrieve his tomahawk.

YouTube Assassins Creed Cast Q&A Panel (Sac-Anime 2014) on the OG Daniel-San86 YouTube channel. "I told them [Ubisoft], I told them that they should throw it, and then in the DLC [The Tyranny of King Washington], they did a cinematic where, uh, Connor throws it into somebody's face or something, takes it out, and hits somebody else with it. But I think you are completely right. I also was asking them the whole time, "How come I can't, how come limbs don't come off?", y'know? When, when you cut somebody, when you stab them, their arm should come off and like, spraying blood. But they said it would be too hard to mocap that because they'd have to find somebody who doesn't have a leg or something." from 52:55–53:30
