Thyra was the leader of the Eagle Clan and a member of the Varangian Guard in Constantinople in the 860s.
Biography[]
In 867, prior to the arrival of Basim Ibn Ishaq into the city, Thyra heard of the rumors of the outsider seeking to challenge the rule of Emperor Basil I and of him representing a greater force, the Hidden Ones. That same year, while trading for silk at a market in Constantinople, Thyra and some of her fellow Varagians overheard fighting in a nearby alley. They then aided Hytham and Basim in a fight against a group of mercenaries. Thyra mentioned the rumors to Basim and suggested a change in venue to a safe place where they could talk. The Hidden Ones then led the group to the house of their ally Demetrios Hestiun.[1]
At Hestiun's house, Thyra asked Basim if he was the one who proclaimed his intent against Basil I and he agreed. Within their conversation, Empress Eudocia Ingerina arrived at the house and later implores the Hidden Ones to help her son Leo from the attempts on his life.[2] Within the conversation, Thyra offered a place for one of them to join the Varangian guards to protect Leo. They agreed on the promise of an alliance between the Hidden Ones and the Eagle Clan, to which both Thyra and Eudocia agreed on before leaving.[3]
On Hytham's first day, Thyra accompanied both Hytham and Leo with the empress while former guardian Justin gave Hytham a tour of the palace.[4] They later caught up when Hytham came into the children's library, where Leo and his tutor Theodore were.[5] After the day passed, Thyra went to sleep until she woke up from Hytham's plea to guard Leo. Guarding Leo, Thyra was later told of two vipers being set loose near Leo and to call for more soldiers.[6]
When Emperor Basil called to meet with Hytham, Thyra was instructed to bring Leo and was later rudely dismissed.[7] Two weeks later, Thyra took over Hytham's duties while he and Basim investigated Leo's nurse Anna. The next day, Thyra talked with Hytham about their commitment while being asked over her own stake for Leo. She stated that she and her clan view Leo to be strong in other areas despite outsiders' beliefs. She also admitted that Basim inquired about her knowledge of other clans but nothing more. Ending their talk, she told Hytham to go to sleep while she kept watch.[8]
Thyra was later found by Basim, who discussed more about their suspects as well as Hytham's relationship with Leo. However, their conversation was cut short when a flustered Hytham interrupted them. Together, they all came upon the dead Varangian guard Steros, who was commissioned to secretly kill Hytham. While the Hidden Ones took the body, Thyra spent her time cleaning up the blood.[8] The next day, Thyra took over Leo's security while the Hidden Ones investigated Justin.[9]
However, their absence caused Thyra and her guards to be ambushed and attacked by the Order of the Ancients at the palace. Fortunately, Basim came and fought alongside her and managed to kill of their attackers. Thyra and her reinforcements secured the area while Hytham and Basim were able to save Leo.[10] However, after the attack, Thyra and Leo came along with Basim, who had to search for Hytham as he went to find the Order's hideout and most likely became captured. Together, they found an Order compound in an abandoned building. Thyra faced off against the Order leader Isaac and his people while Basim went to rescue Hytham. While Leo hid, Thyra managed to kill nearly all except Isaac and another assailant.[11]
When the Hidden Ones joined in, their attackers were nearly killed but Isaac escaped. Thyra asked Leo to come out and assist Leo outside while she and Basim cleaned up the mess and inspected the area. Afterwards, they began to go back to the palace[11] but not before Hytham led them to another building where they found a note implicating Theodore's part in the palace attack. While walking back, Thyra admitted that she administered a culling within her guards to root out any traitors[12]
Back at the palace, Thyra informed Empress Eudocia of Theodore's part in the attack which led to Emperor Basil's immediate approval for execution.[13] Within days, Thyra accompanied the imperial family outside to Philopation to escape any rumors of the palace attack. Besides Hytham, she told him not to beat himself up as she stated that Basim also reneged the mission to save him. When Basim used his bird-call, Thyra took over watching Leo while Hytham met with Basim.[14]
Informed of Basil's Hippodrome race event, Thyra was later told of the Hidden Ones' plan to make Leo bait for the Order. Reluctant, Thyra and Hytham expressed the same sentiment but aided to set up the emperor's box for a clear view of Leo.[15] On the day of the race, Thyra informed Hytham that Basim never came to meet with her. Moving forward, Thyra and the Varangian guards escorted the imperial family to the Hippodrome. When the race began, Thyra stayed with the family while Hytham searched for Basim outside the arena.[16]
When it came for Emperor Basil to race, Thyra stayed with Eudocia and Leo in the emperor's box while remaining vigilant. However, when Basil's cart had an accident, an arrow was shot into the box and Thyra covered the empress. However, Leo was abducted but was followed by both Hidden Ones and later Thyra and Justin. Cornering the Order attackers with Leo, they saw them jump from a window into the streets. Thyra joined Hytham and Justin and followed the Order into an alley, where Basim joined them and Isaac came to aid his warriors.[17]
Fighting against Isaac's forces, Thyra was able to kill both a warrior and Leo's captor, who lost hold of Leo when he bit her. Afterwards, she saw Isaac die by the Hidden Ones' hands and Justin saving Leo from the last Order member.[18] With the Order's alliance with Basil effectively over, Thyra and Justin proceeded with protecting Leo without any outside interference.[19]
