Thorgest (died 845) was a Viking chief active in Ireland during the 9th-century.

Biography[]

A fierce warrior from Scandinavia, Thorgest arrived in Ireland in 820. He also founded what would later become the Kingdom of Dublin, and is considered its earliest king. In 845 he was captured by High King Máel Sechnaill mac Máele Ruanaid of Clann Cholmáin and was drowned in Lough Neagh.[1]

Legacy[]

Two of his drengir, Hogne Sea-Tossed and Blud the Giant, remained in Ireland until their deaths in glorious combat in 879. His personal shield, sunk with him at his death, was recovered by the jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan after she had defeated his two drengir.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Historical accounts of Thorgest's death differ. It is commonly held that he was drowned in Lough Owel near Mullingar instead of in Lough Neagh as depicted in-game, though an alternate story suggests he was assassinated by a dozen young men disguised as the entourage and daughter of the local noble Melaghlin, not Maél Sechnaill, after demanding the woman's hand in marriage.[1]
