The Thieves' Guild, also known as the Assassin's Guild,[1] was the headquarters of the Aragonese Assassins. Located in central Barcelona, the Aragonese Assassins and the city's thieves' guild were synonymous.
Description[]
The Thieves' Guild of Barcelona based itself in the tallest tower in the city. It had a wooden hatch on its roof, which served as a secret entrance.[1]
History[]
In the latter 15th century, the Spanish Brotherhood was decimated by the Spanish Inquisition,[1][2] which was secretly acting under the direction of the Templar Order.[3][4] Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Roman Rite, engineered the purge by alerting Grand Inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada to the existence of this largely atheistic society even though Torquemada was himself the Grand Master of the Spanish Rite.[3][4] The identities of these Assassins were in turn passed onto Gaspar Martínez, the Inquisition Prosecutor of the tribunal of Barcelona. Martínez was not aware of the true nature of the Assassins, believing that they had perished with their state in the 13th century, but this was of little consequence, for he believed that this group of men were heretical regardless.[5]
In 1491, Prosecutor Martínez ordered the arrest of all Assassins in Barcelona, and his soldiers stormed their bases, principally the thieves' guild. The disappearance of the Assassins from Barcelona led to a general vacuum of Assassins in Spain that drove the Assassin Luis de Santángel to seek help from Italian Assassins in protecting his friend Christoffa Corombo when they visited Venice that same year.[2][6]
From Santángel, the Florentine Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze caught wind of the plight of the Barcelonian Assassins, and, determining that it was his duty to come to their aid, journeyed to Barcelona later that year.[2] Two Barcelonian contacts of Antonio de Magianis, who led the Thieves' Guild of Venice, provided Ezio with hints as to the location of the Thieves' Guild.[1] Long before he arrived, however, the Thieves' Guild of Barcelona had already been cleared of Assassins by the Inquisition, and their troops occupied its premises. When Ezio dived from the entrance in the roof into the guild hall, he was immediately ambushed by the soldiers and forced to flee.[7]
