Theodosius I (Latin: Flavius Theodosius Augustus; Greek: Θεοδόσιος; 347 – 395), born Flavius Theodosius, was Roman Emperor from 379 to his death.

Biography[]

One of the emperors who adopted Christianity, Theodosius issued a decree which declared the Nicene Christianity as the only legitimate imperial religion, which led to the closure and destruction of most pagan temples in the Roman Empire. This decree also supposedly led to the destruction of the Library of Alexandria.[1] During this time of pagan prosecution, executions of Belgae pagans were a routine occurrence in the streets of Rome. Theodosius ignored all calls for compromise, as a result he became an enemy of the Hidden Ones.[2]

In 390, Theodosius transported an Egyptian obelisk from Alexandria to Constantinople, where he placed it in the Hippodrome[3] on an ornately carved base that he had specially constructed to hold it. In 393, Theodosius repaired, improved and christened the Forum of Theodosius to commemorate his victories in battle and politics.[4] He also augmented the Harbor of Theodosius, causing it to become a major port for the trading of agricultural goods, and later a military outpost.[5]
