The Reckoning was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Basim Ibn Ishaq in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, in which a vision of one of Odin's memories could be seen.
Description[]
Havi went to meet with Brokkr and Ivaldi about the Salakar.
Dialogue[]
Some time after Baldr's death, Havi returned to Svartálfaheimr. As he travelled there, he bitterly and silently remembered a conversation he had with Baldr when he was an adult.
- Havi: Surtr and I, we crossed blades once. Back when there was nothing at stake but our pride... Of course, one day, he and I must fight again. I do not know when, nor why. Only that it will happen. And when it does, you must stand well clear. I will not risk my most beloved child getting caught in that fray.
Havi arrived at a cliffside overlooking the Realm.
- Havi: Svartalfheim. Even after all these eternities away, I still hate the place. yet it offers me the hope of revenge, sweetest of morsels. The realm is changed. But this is not Surtr's doing. It is something more.
Havi made his way to Hodda Shelter, only to see that Muspel warriors invaded it.
- Havi: What? Has the shelter fallen? These Muspels are a plague!
Havi soon fought all the Muspel warriors.
- Dwarven Fugitive 1: Help us, High One!
- Dwarven Fugitive 2: Save us!
- Dwarven Fugitive 3: Please help us!
- Dwarven Fugitive 4: Rid us of these savages!
- Dwarven Fugitive 5: Don't let any of them escape!
- Dwarven Fugitive 3: Don't abandon us!
- Ivaldi: Havi! You are back!
- Havi: Yes, yes. One moment while I clear up this mess.
Havi soon set all the dwarves free.
- Ivaldi: Damn Muspels, they came out of nowhere.
- Havi: Where is the Salakar? Have you lost it?
- Ivaldi: Brokkr left the shelter yesterday before the raid even happened. Took the Salakar with him.
- Havi: Where has he taken it?
- Ivaldi: Since you went away he has become... erratic. The Salakar, it... it's all that matters to him now.
- Havi: You should learn from his example. Now, where is he? Where?
- Ivaldi: The other night he spoke of exploring the crater of Eitri to seek out more answers.
- Havi: He takes the Salakar to Surtr's front door?
- Ivaldi: Wait! Where have you been these past few days?
- Havi: Days? No matter, it is where I go that matters.
- Ivaldi: And where is that? Eitri?
- Havi: Wherever I can find vengeance.
- Ivaldi: Calm yourself, Havi. Collect your wits. An eye for an eye will leave us all blind.
- Havi: What do I care for eyes!?
Havi left the shelter and headed towards Eitri to find Brokkr. With haste, Havi arrived at Eitri's crater.
- Havi: I must find Brokkr in Eitri's crater. The brave fool means well, but risks cheating me of my vengeance. What is it with these two brothers? One died sneaking after mead. The other now risks death by taking his job too far.
Havi soon found an injured Brokkr on the ground.
- Havi: Brokkr! Where is my Salakar!?
- Brokkr: Take it easy. It's right here. Nice and safe. Wanted to investigate something, but then I tripped and―
- Havi: Can you walk? No? Then I shall carry you.
- Brokkr: Gentle. I ain't a bleeding sack of spuds, you know.
Havi carried Brokkr.
- Havi: What have you learned of the Salakar?
- Brokkr: Might just know how to use it. Of course, you going after Surtr... you'll most likely end up feasting in Valhalla.
- Havi: Valhalla? It is for the feeble and blundering. No, I shall not die. Worlds may end. But, I, Havi, shall abide.
- Brokkr: What about Sindri? You calling him feeble?
- Havi: What would he be doing in... Ah yes, yes. He is there in Valhalla, of course. For one such as he, it is a great honor.
Havi found a secure and safe place for Brokkr.
- Havi: Now then, this looks like a good place to put you down.
Havi placed Brokkr down.
- Havi: So? Tell me of the Salakar's purpose.
- Brokkr: Haven't a clue.
- Havi: Can it kill Surtr?
- Brokkr: Well, that ain't its purpose. But yeah, I think it can.
- Havi: How?
- Brokkr: It harnesses light. A lot of light.
- Havi: That was Baldr's gift. To turn day to night and back. Is that why Surtr stole his hugr?
- Brokkr: Yeah. The others, they're just for... balance. But, see, there is one more in there. Like Baldr's, incomplete...
- Havi: Whose is this hugr?
- Brokkr: Surtr's. An itsy-bitsy snippet, mind you.
- Havi: I don't understand.
- Brokkr: I think... I think if the Salakar touches Surtr, the two will... come together.
- Havi: The Salakar is already complete. Nothing gets in or out.
- Brokkr: A torn hugr will always try to reunite itself. His might just be strong enough to do it. If that happens, he will become the Salakar.
- Havi: Then nothing can stop him!
- Brokkr: Only if he can control all that light. But I don't think he can. His old carcass ain't made for it. It'll be like trying to hold the ocean in a single hog's bladder.
- Havi: This thinking... How can I be sure you're right?
- Brokkr: You ain't heard all me workings out.
- Havi: Do you truly believe the coming together will be too much for Surtr?
- Brokkr: Best try it when he's weak. Ideally dead. Not dead-dead, of course. Just normal dead. Before he wakes up all over again.
- Havi: You've done well. Now give me the Salakar and leave this place. It is too dangerous.
- Brokkr: I ain't leaving. I come this far―
- Havi: Do as you're told! Friend.
Brokkr gave the Salakar to Havi and then left.
- Havi: I wonder. Does Brokkr send me to my death? No. My destiny is Ragnarök. Far in the future. Not Svartalfheim.
Havi went to find and confront Surtr.
- Havi: Be strong, High One... Gorge upon these bitter fruits. Turn them into... savage victory! Baldr... you will be avenged. That... that is my pledge.
Havi arrived at the King's Palace.
- Havi: No one... no one shall dare strike down the seed of Odin and live to tell the tale!
Havi entered the palace and met with Surtr who sat in his throne.
- Havi: Here, fool! Your twilight comes!
- Surtr: Still drawing breath!? I have a cure for that!
Havi and Surtr began to fight each other.
- Surtr: Baldr squealed like a pig when I ripped out his hugr!
- Havi: You won't squeal! You'll be too busy choking on your own sword!
- Surtr: I will be master of all nine realms!
- Havi: You're not even master of this room!
- Surtr: I am Surtr, destroyer of worlds!
- Havi: I am Ragnarök, destroyer of Surtr!
Havi defeated and killed Surtr temporarily. Brokkr sneaked inside the palace as Havi pulled out the Salakar. Havi soon plunged the Salakar onto Surtr.
- Havi: Die!
A strong pulse of light filled the room as it destroyed the palace in its wake. Havi still stood as Brokkr was found in the rubble. Surtr was nowhere to be seen and presumed dead.
- Brokkr: Hey! Give us a hand!
- Havi: This is no place for dwarves.
- Brokkr: I've earned my right to see this through.
Brokkr stood from the rubble.
- Brokkr: I told you it would work. And there you were, doubting me.
A noise emerged from the throne as Surtr reconfigured himself.
- Brokkr: I... I might've got it wrong.
Surtr growled as he looked at Havi and Brokkr, who pointed at the Salakar.
- Brokkr: This looks like it was just the key. That, on the other hand...
Waves of light energy swirled around the Tower Maekinn, far across from the demolished palace.
- Surtr: Half... a key. You... want the rest?
Surtr walked towards Havi and Brokkr.
- Surtr: Come... claim it!
Surtr challenged Havi, who looked to Brokkr.
- Havi: You really shouldn't have come here.
Havi picked up the Salakar quickly and taunted Surtr.
- Havi: You come and claim it!
Surtr screamed as Brokkr remained motionless. Surtr picked up a huge boulder and gave chase.
- Surtr: I don't run from the fire! I am the fire!
Surtr crushed Brokkr with the boulder and threw it at Havi. Havi began running towards the Tower.
- Surtr: There is no escape, little mouse! You hop well for a one-eyed toad!
Havi ran and made towards Maekinn. However, Surtr reconfigured himself there.
- Surtr: Don't worry, maggot. I am right here.
Havi and Surtr fought once more. After a lengthy fight, Havi defeated Surtr again. Havi quickly dragged Surtr's body into the middle of their arena.
- Havi: So much for your grand plan, you fool.
Havi grabbed Surtr's sword Elderstahl.
- Havi: You sought... to harness the power of the light. The power of my son!
Havi plunged the sword into Surtr's head.
- Havi: It would've turned you into the wrecker of worlds. But in this feeble state... his light... will devour you whole!
Havi used the Salakar once more as the light started to create a beam from Surtr's body to the sky through the tower. Havi watched as the light built as Surtr tried to revive himself.
- Surtr: (choking)
Surtr was finally defeated and completely disintegrated. Havi completed his quest of vengeance and headed to the Hodda Shelter to share the news. At the shelter, Havi shared his victory with the dwarves within the shelter.
- Havi: Smell that? The breath of liberty. My gift to you.
All the dwarves looked disinterested and betrayed.
- Havi: Why the sour faces? Would you rather remain fugitives―
Hyrrokin appeared behind Havi and walked forward in front of him.
- Havi: Hyrrokin? So, the whispers were true. You were here in Svartalfheim all along?
- Hyrrokin: You have been busy, High One. Your vengeance floods the entire land like a raging river that has burst its banks.
- Havi: Why are you here?
- Hyrrokin: I, too, bring a gift. Dread rumors from Asgard. Rumors you would have heard had you not been so... preoccupied.
- Havi: What has Loki done now!?
- Hyrrokin: Escaped the cell in which you left him to rot. Unbound Fenrir. Awoken Jörmungandr. Rallied Hel. Now raising an army like no other. Clearly, he has been busy too. Of course, Loki is not your only problem. Soon, the gates of Muspelheim will grind open and its minions will emerge, demanding retribution for their fallen king. And let us not forget Suttungr in Jotunheim. Do you really think he will miss this chance to settle old scores? Your vengeance comes at a price, High One, and you and everything you hold dear are it.
- Havi: So, there is to be a fight? I haven't lost one yet.
- Hyrrokin: You have heard of the Twilight Sword?
- Havi: Surtr's blade? Destined to cut the sky and signal Ragnarök? I stuffed it down his gullet.
Hyrrokin laughed.
- Hyrrokin: As I came here, a great beam of light rose from that lone tower. Tore the sky asunder... Your doing I assume? It is you who ignites Ragnarök.
Havi was caught off guard.
- Havi: So it begins. By my own hand. Hyrrokin, a favor please.
- Hyrrokin: Have I not already done you one?
- Havi: Not for me. For you. Go to the tower you spoke of. Within, you will find an elven marvel lying amid the ashes. Take it.
- Hyrrokin: Why?
- Havi: It offers a way to deliver the one you have lost... yet seek to save. But first it must be emptied of those lost souls within.
- Hyrrokin: I already have a plan to rescue my love.
- Havi: There's always a better one. Now go.
Hyrrokin left as Ivaldi approached Havi.
- Ivaldi: What is this trick? You don't care about her lost love.
- Havi: I care about Baldr. If she can free him, even unintentionally, he may yet make it to... the other side of Ragnarök. Ragnarök comes, yet I will abide. Though not as I am, and not in this body. I will not forget this life. Not one breath. I will always remember when Odin, son of Bor, father of Thor was me!
Outcome[]
Havi finally killed Surtr, but also commenced Ragnarök, as he also faced attacks from all sides of the Nine Realms.
