The Puppeteer was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[]
Eivor came across a talking corpse requesting some money.
Dialogue[]
Eivor came upon a talking corpse propped up near a locked entrance to some tunnels.
- Dead Body: Heaven won't let me in! I'm stuck being dead.
Wayfarer! I'm dead. I'm so dead!
Help me, wayfarer, or you'll see me in your dreams! I'm warning you! In your dreams, I said!
She approached it.
- Dead Body: Speak!
- Eivor: What are you?
- Dead Body: I died a terrible death, killed by wolves or something. Nobody read the last rites! I'm stuck in purgatory. Have a heart, wayfarer, give a little something to help free me.
- Eivor: Give something?
- Dead Body: A little... offering to help a fellow out on my journey to the land of the dead.
- Eivor: I am not fooled by trickery.
- Dead Body: Don't pester dead people! Fifty pieces of silver will be enough to bring me peace.
Eivor eyed the interior of the tunnels intently and found a gap under the wall.
- Eivor: I will find you... and kill you.
- Dead Body: Twelve pieces of silver?
- Eivor: You'll soon be dead enough.
- Dead Body: A head of cabbage?
Eivor began walking away.
- Dead Body: What about it, wayfarer? Are you listening? I'm a dead man!
I don't have all day, wayfarer. You should know, the dead do not have an abundance of patience!
My soul won't rest until you open your purse and put some fucking silver on the ground!
Eivor started searching for the ventriloquist away from the body.
- Dead Body: Wayfarer? Where are you going? Get back here!
- (If Eivor dropped 10 silver)
- Dead Body: Ah! Now I can rest in peace in the land of the dead and all that. You can go, wayfarer. Go ahead. No need to stay!
She came upon a house on the hill above the tunnels and found a secret entrance behind a shelf.
- Eivor: Ah! What is this? An entrance.
Eivor entered the tunnels and found the ventriloquist.
- Eivor: The voice of the dead! You appear much livelier than I expected.
- Swindler: I tried to swindle you, so what? Life is tough! It's good business being a dead man. No need to get angry about this.
Eivor eyed the nearby chest and determined it had all of his swindled loot. She cleaned it out and he turned hostile.
- Swindler: That's mine! I swindled hard for that! Give it here.
Eivor killed the scammer.
- Eivor: Now you are truly dead. Speak all you want.
On a crate nearby she found a note from the swindler and one from someone who had fallen for the trick.
- Charlatan's Note
Another sorry day in my miserable life. It's no joy to drag a stinking corpse and set it just so with sticks and rocks, then hide, hoping, hoping, hoping some drooling ceorl will come along and listen to my tale of purgatory.
Making the voice sound just right is no small task. And near every time, they aren't fooled and knock the corpse sideways and I have to start anew.
But then there are times when they give silver and believe they've saved a soul. They're so happy to have done something good in this sad world. Makes it all worth it, it does.
- Note of a Giving Soul:
A dead man spoke to me! Poor fellow, he looked like he died rough. Said a few coins would help him on his way to the afterlife. He frightened me worse than a lightning storm. I gave him all I had. I must ask a priest if I'm cursed.
Outcome[]
Eivor discovered the hidden tunnel beneath the house and killed the swindler.
