The Last Raid was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[]
Eivor came across a man working on a longship.
Dialogue[]
Eivor entered the grounds of a homestead in Oxenefordscire and heard a woman musing loudly about her husband.
- Sif: Alvar is an old fool, trying to live his dream. But when do we bring in the harvest?
In the yard with the beached longship, she heard a man shouting orders.
- Alvar: Listen up, crew! Sharpen your blades and your wits. We will go a-pillaging we will!
Blow, winds! Fill my sails! Carry us across seas and fjords!
We'll soak the beach in blood, we will. No gold hoard is safe from us!
Eivor spoke to him.
- Eivor: You are a long way from home, Norseman.
- Alvar: Ah! I may be, but my sixty winters have not slaked my taste for raiding. Ans I have the finest crew on the sea.
- Eivor: You have no crew.
- Alvar: Do you not see them? Stout fellows all. And you! Make yourself useful and help prepare the ship, friend.
Eivor loaded some nearby crates with ore.
- Alvar: Yes! Bring ore. We'll need to repair weapons and shields.
- Eivor: But you have no blacksmith.
- Alvar: Ah! Nonsense. Black Bjorn is about somewhere. He's our man.
She planed some wood planks.
- Alvar: Bring planks! We'll face teeth-jarring storms. The ship will cry for repairs.
Eivor gathered some hay with a pitchfork.
- Alvar: Thor in Heaven, we'll need hay! We'll use it to set fortress walls afire!
Having completed her "tasks", Alvar called out to Eivor.
- Alvar: We're ready to launch out on the roiling sea! Summon Skarde, Knut, and the rest of the crew! Blow your horn!
He quickly grew impatient.
- Alvar: O, by the gods! Will you blow that damn horn?
Eivor blew her horn.
- Alvar: The battle-horn is sounded! Men! Make the blood-rain fall in a thunderstorm!
The horn attracted a pack of wolves, which immediately attacked them.
- Eivor: Wolves!
- Alvar: Enemies! Battle is upon us, men! Let none survive our bloodlust!
Die, you miserable Saxons!
Gah! These Saxons fight with their teeth!
Eivor killed the wolves.
- Alvar: Huh! That was a battle for the ages, that was!
Eivor approached Alvar.
- Eivor: You're lucky to still be alive.
- Alvar: The crew fought like heroes. No Saxon survived, just like the old days!
- Eivor: Friend, there was no crew. Only you and me. Your Saxons were but mangy wolves.
- Alvar: No! Bjorn, Skarde, they were all here, fighting at my side. Heh! Just as they did in the raids of yore.
- Eivor: Gone now. Today you led their shades on a ghost ship. Your raiding days are done. Your crew feasts in Valhalla.
- Alvar: Can it—can it—can it be? Huh... If so, it was worth it. One last raid. Thank you, my friend.
Eivor passed by Sif on her way off the grounds.
- Sif: Has my fond husband calmed down yet? It's soon time to bring in the harvest.
Outcome[]
Eivor helped Alvar and killed the wolves attacking them.
