PL Truth SeekerHQ They call me many things: Murderer. Cutthroat. Thief. But you may call me The Hydra.

"Those who do not fear Kosmos can learn to breathe beneath the waves."
―The Hydra's motto.[src]

The Hydra (died c. 420s BCE), also known as Hydra the Many-Headed was a member and the Sage of the Gods of the Aegean Sea branch of the Cult of Kosmos.

Biography[]

At a relatively young age, the Hydra was at first but a captain of a simple ship. He however claimed the position of the ship's commander, fatally dealing with all those who opposed him.[1] In time, the Hydra earned his right to be the leader of his branch of the Cult of Kosmos, though still considered young.[2] He oversaw his branch with keen eye, approving of ships,[3] and demanding the sacrifice of others when the need arose.[4]

However, when the Peloponnesian War raged, the Hydra withdrew, without a word to his followers, save by telling The Mytilenian Shark that he could have the Southern Sporades, and threatening with a watery death anyone who dared to follow him to the waters south of Messenia.[5] Even The Octopus, a captain her peers considered to be close to The Hydra,[6] had nothing else to say then that The Hydra wanted the Cultist-turncoat Swordfish found.[2]

Seen sailing west aboard his trireme the Hyperion, alone,[6] the Hydra sought the waters south of Messenia,[5] and haunted the waves there.[7] In time, he crossed the path of the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who had sworn to hunt down and kill all members of the Cult of Kosmos. The ships of the two clashed, and the Hydra was slain.[8]

Personality and traits[]

"He's fiery, and likes his secrets."
―The Mytilenian Shark[src]

Vicious enough to catch the eye of the Cult on that merit alone[1], the Hydra was considered by the Mytilenian Shark to be 'fiery'.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

The Hydra, a character in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, shares his name with a legendary snake in the Greek mythology. The connection is further enforced by The Hydra's title, 'the Many-Headed', as the mythical snake had multiple heads, which doubled every time one was cut off. The beast was slain by Herakles as his one of his labors, with the aid of his nephew Iolaos, by burning the Hydra's necks, so that it could not regenerate new heads.
