The Boar with the Golden Nose was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[]
Eivor came across a man sitting at his camp with a wild boar.
Dialogue[]
In southwest Essexe, Eivor encountered a boarmaster heaping praise on his pet hog.
- Boarmaster: Who is the most gorgeous girl? You are, yes you are. Snuffling through the leaves, making daddy a fortune! Good girl, Lady Trotters, good girl.
Eivor approached him.
- Eivor: Nice pig.
- Boarmaster: Pig? You ignoramus. Lady Trotters is a hog. And the most unique and singular beauty.
Eivor chuckled.
- Eivor: Shall I leave you two alone?
- Boarmaster: Please do, and not for the reasons you are insinuating. You are confusing her delicate nose with your earthy stench.
- Eivor: Some like my smell. So she's a mushroom hog? I have heard of such rare beasts.
- Boarmaster: Mushrooms? She sniffs out treasure.
- Eivor: Treasure?
- Boarmaster: Epping Forest is full of it. And Lady Trotters finds it. Ah, she has the scent! Come, I'll show you.
Lady Trotters took off chasing a scent. Eivor and the boarmaster followed.
- Boarmaster: There you go, my lovely. Find us riches and you shall have sweet red berries for supper!
They followed Lady Trotters to the roots of a tree, where the boarmaster unearthed some used footwear.
- Boarmaster: More rancid socks. Bandits leave them lying around and Lady is drawn to their unholy stench! A lost cause. I'm going for a nap. If Lady runs off, follow her, would you? What she finds we'll share. The socks are all yours.
Eivor salvaged what she could from the socks as the boarmaster headed back to his camp.
- Eivor: Run, Lady. Find me something heavy and rich!
Lady Trotters led her to the water's edge near an abandoned boat, where Eivor unearthed a wooden doll.
- Eivor: Yes! A fine hoard. Good Lady Trotters, you are the best of hogs! Go, Lady Trotters, run like Fenrir is on your heels!
Lady Trotters led her to near a ruined Roman column, where she unearthed a shiny orb.
- Eivor: You are a beast to rival Gullinbursti, Freyja's beloved golden boar! Did the dwarves make you, too? What I wouldn't do for a beast as clever as you!
Lady Trotters led her further west, but before Eivor could unearth her findings, they were ambushed by bandits.
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier (female): Get that boar, its nose is golden!
- Eivor: You will not harm a bristle on the beautiful boar's back!
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier (female): Give us that boar!
- Eivor: I'll protect you, Lady.
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier (female): I'm taking the beast over your dead body.
No one kills the beast, it's worth more than all your lives put together!
Eivor killed the ambushers.
- Eivor: There, good girl. The nasty, smelly thugs won't bother you anymore.
Eivor examined the final spot but retrieved nothing of value from the final spot. Lady Trotters ran for home while Eivor followed, eventually catching up to her at the boarmaster's camp.
- Eivor: Wake up, Lady Trotters found treasure!
- Boarmaster: Did she, now? Well, you must have the knack. She does not take to strangers kindly. Do you, girl?
- Eivor: Bandits attacked us, but I took care of them.
- Boarmaster: Bandits? If you hadn't been there, I dread to think. Please, keep all the treasure. Your payment for my sweet girl's life.
- Eivor: That is an incredible animal you have there.
- Boarmaster: Isn't she? Bramble-sharp and gentle as a kitten. Earns her keep and more besides.
- Eivor: I wish I had as good a companion as Lady Trotters. One of my gods, Freyja, had a boar. It is said that the gloom of the Murky Regions was lighted, such was the glow from its mane. But Lady outshines him.
- Boarmaster: Aye, she does. I will never find another friend like her. Well, goodbye. Fare safe on your travels.
- Eivor: And you. Happy hunting, Lady!
Outcome[]
Eivor followed Lady Trotters who found a few trade goods, and protected her from bandits. She returned to the Boarmaster with news of her finds.
