Thales of Miletios (c. 624 BCE – c. 546 BCE) was an early Greek philosopher, mathematician and astronomer from Miletios.

Thales was known for his research in the astronomical field, in which he recognized the importance of the stars to the sailors. He was also known for his research on the Ursa Minor constellation, also known as the 'Little Bear'.[1] At one point, Thales took Anaximandros as one of his students, who in turn later became the teacher of Anaximenes.[2]

During the Peloponnesian War, a design for the finery of a ship called The Stargazer was inspired by and dedicated to him.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Plato, another Greek philosopher, counted Thales among the Seven Sages of Greece. Others in that group were Pittacus of Mytilene, Bias of Priene, Solon of Athens, Chilon of Sparta, and either Cleobulus, Periander of Korinth, Myson of Chenae or Anacharsis the Scythian.
