In 431 BCE, the temple complex was visited by the misthios Kassandra. She was approached by a priestess seeking her aid in recovering a spear belonging to Kephalos, a mythological figure that the island was named after. The priestess provided Kassandra some clues, which helped her find the Melissani Cave nearby. Kassandra retrieved the spear, giving it to the priestess.
