ACO Temple of Thoth Entrance

Entrance to the temple

The Temple of Thoth was a temple situated in Hermopolis dedicated to the Egyptian god of magic and writing, Thoth.

During the mid-1st century BCE, Thoth was replaced by Hermes Trismegistus as the patron god of the city on the orders of Berenike, the Nomarch of the Faiyum Oasis. Berenike wrote a letter of commendation to the temple's inhabitants, extending her thanks for embracing Hermes and promised they would be well compensated.[1]

The temple was later visited by the Medjay Bayek of Siwa around 48 BCE, and he found within it one of the Papyrus Puzzles.[2]
