Talâyi was one of the wives to a Persian harbor master before his death, alongside others like Roshan, Nai, and Halima.

Biography[]

Talâyi was the third of the harbor master's wives, with the older two teaching her plenty before they were killed for their "transgressions". Talâyi herself was punished for a perceived transgression, with him taking her left eye, but kept her life. She refused to comfort her husband by hiding her wound and did not wear an eyepatch.[1] At some point she became pregnant, and the harbor master left her alone for eight months until she bore him a son, whom he took away. After learning that she could carry a pregnancy to term, however, he never left her alone. After Roshan joined the harem in 816, Talâyi provided her with herbs that would keep her from becoming pregnant, swearing the young girl to secrecy.[2]

When Roshan killed their husband in 819, Talâyi found her soon after the fact and talked with her, warning that she could not return home to her family, for the city alarm in Baghdad had already been sounded and soldiers would no doubt be dispatched there to look for her as well. When Roshan decided that she wanted to live rather than give herself up for execution, Talâyi and four other wives helped her by blocking the soldiers' path when they attempted to board the houseboat, giving Roshan time to escape.[1]
