The Tahirid dynasty, also known as the Tahirids, was a dynasty of Persian nobles who served as autonomous governors of Khorasan from 821 to 873 in vassalage to the Abbasid Caliphate.

History[]

As the Hidden Ones' stronghold of Alamut was located in the region governed by the Tahirids, they negotiated a deal with the Tahirids governors to provide them protection from their enemies, the Order of the Ancients. By the 860s, however, the Order had infiltrated the ranks of the Abbasid court and began to pressure the Tahirids, due to the Hidden Ones' support of the rebels led by Ali ibn Muhammad.[1]

By the time Muhammad ibn Tahir came to power as governor, he negotiated a deal with the Order to put a stop to Abu 'Abdallah's challenge to the Abbasid throne. In exchange, he surrendered the location of Alamut to the Order, and forced his cousin Abdallah ibn Tahir to remove the Tahirids' protection of the Hidden Ones' stronghold.[2] This enabled the Order to launch an attack on Alamut, with a Caliphate force led by Kabeer Al-Jund.[3]
