St. John's wort is a plant with yellow flowers of the family Hypericaceae.
5th century BCE
Known as hypereikon, an extract from the plant was believed to help with feverish contagion.
During the 19th century, the Language of Flowers mentioned how the plant was believed to act as an apotropaic. For this belief of repelling phantoms and other "spirits of darkness", the plant was also known as Solterrestres, meaning the 'Terrestrial Sun'. Evie Frye helped Henry Green fill up his herbarium in London in 1866, and St. John's wort was one of the flowers she gathered.
