Spiritual Defense was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[]
Eivor met with Ake who replaced Alvis in a ritual.
Dialogue[]
Eivor waited for Alvis after dark, only to be approached by Ake, the brewer's apprentice.
- Ake: Ah! Good, you're here.
- Eivor: Where's Alvis?
- Ake: Yes, well, you see, Alvis and I got into a little argument. I may have made some disparaging remarks about his paranoid fears.
- Eivor: Hm. I don't imagine he took that well.
- Ake: No, he did not. He told me that if I was so sure his fears were baseless, then I should perform the ritual in his stead.
- Eivor: Have you ever done anything like this?
- Ake: Goodness no. But he left a list. Anyway, how hard can it be?
- Eivor: What does the list say?
- Ake: It says to start by lighting fires 'round the settlement to create a "protective barrier against spirits." Utter nonsense and a waste of time.
- Eivor: Perhaps, but I would feel better honoring Alvis' wishes.
- Ake: Of course. Of course. Go light the fires and then return to me. There are more steps on this list.
Eivor nodded and went to find the firepits that had been prepared around Ravensthorpe. She tracked down the eight fire pits and lit them.
- Eivor: This looks to be the spot.
That's one fire pit down.
I see a fire pit over there.
There. The fire should last until morning.
I think I've found one of the fire pits.
May this fire protect us.
That looks like a fire pit.
This should burn brightly.
All the fires have been lit. I should return to Ake.
She returned to the ritual site.
- Eivor: Ake. All the fires have been lit around Ravensthorpe.
- Ake: Good. Now follow me. The next step takes place in the forest.
Eivor followed Ake.
- Ake: You warriors are so worried about your spirits. Like today is any different than any other day.
- Eivor: Be careful, Ake. That kind of thinking can leave you defenseless in the face of the unknown.
- Ake: Perhaps. Or perhaps it leaves me more time to work on my craft and not spend so much time worrying.
- Eivor: What does Alvis ask for this next step?
- Ake: We're to draw out any spirits that have crossed into our world and would do us harm, and destroy them.
- Eivor: And how will we find them?
- Ake: There will be a rune or ward that has let them into our world. I assume we'll know it when we see it.
- Eivor: Seems easy enough. And how do we banish the spirits?
- Ake: Hmm. It doesn't say. Maybe we can talk to them? Otherwise I've found a punch to be a reliable deterrent.
On a cliff in the forest they found a scarecrow-like totem made of wood and bones.
- Eivor: I'm here, Ake.
- Ake: Come, Eivor. Let's finish this foolish errand.
Eivor touched the foul totem and the pair were beset by animal spirits.
- Ake: Odin's beard!
- Eivor: Still think the spirits are a foolish myth?
- Ake: Now is not the time for admonishments, Eivor!
Eivor defeated the spirits and approached Ake.
- Eivor: It is done.
- Ake: I can barely believe it! We both saw that, didn't we?
- Eivor: Yes, Ake. It would seem you owe Alvis an apology.
- Ake: I do. But I would never give him the satisfaction. It's back to the brewery for me.
Outcome[]
Eivor and Ake performed the ritual and defeated several angry spirits.
