"This old villa is well hidden. With work, it could host an army of trained Brotherhood Assassins."
―María to Aguilar de Nerha and Tariq al-Nasr, 1489[src]-[m]

The Spanish Brotherhood headquarters was a fortress located in the Sierra de Cazorla mountain range in the Kingdom of Jaén that served as the primary base-of-operations for the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins in the late 15th century.

Description[]

The fortress had three wings and held many rooms. Among them were training rooms, a smithy, an intel room, a treasury, and an initiation room. The fortress also had living quarters, an apothecary, a library, and a supply room that backed onto some docks. After claiming the fortress for themselves, the Assassins adorned the outside with flags and banners of their insignia.[1]

Training rooms[]

The fortress contained two regular training rooms where Assassins could hone their fighting ability. It housed two practice dummies in each room. After substantial renovations, an elite training room was added for Assassins to focus on improving specific skills.[1]

Living quarters[]

The living quarters in the fortress contained several bunk beds and chests for personal possessions. Assassins would rest and recuperate their strength here while not out on missions. Two further extensions were eventually built also, allowing for more Assassins to be spaced in.[1]

Intel room[]

The intelligence room was where teams of Assassins analyzed surveillance reports about Templar activity across Spain.[1] The Assassin and courtesan, Angela Carillo reported what she heard from rich nobles and officers during her nightly escapades directly to the intel room.[2]

Treasury[]

Treasury

The treasury of the fortress allowed the assigned Assassins to collect revenue from the Brotherhood's external business activities. With the accumulated budget gained from such ventures, the Assassins were able to fund more renovations of the fortress and the procurement of supplies, and other necessities.[1]

Weaponsmith[]

The place used to craft weapons for the Assassins,[1] the weaponsmith was heavily utilized by Bartolomé Ortiz, who after being recruited by the Spanish Assassin Brotherhood, became the Master Weaponsmith for them.[3] After many renovations, high quality weapons could be produced, some were even one-off creations made for specific members of the Brotherhood.[1]

Armorsmith[]

The armorsmith was used to craft armor for the Assassins,[1] the Moor Hamid al-Jasur used it to provide armor for his fellow Assassins.[4] After many renovations, the quality of armor being produced significantly increased, some pieces made were even one-off creations made for specific members of the Brotherhood.[1]

Ceremony room[]

When apprentices had gained enough experience, a ceremony would take place in this room of the fortress where the initiate would be ranked up. The higher up their next rank, the more fellow Assassins sat in to see them promoted. After an Assassin was promoted their confidence in their abilities and skills was boosted.[1]

Workshop[]

The fortress' workshop was used to craft accessories for the Assassins, which each new piece created helping them in a different way. In order to properly craft an accessory, appropriate funding and materials were needed.[1] The skilled craftsman Faris al-Saffar used the workshop in order to provide the Brotherhood with his incredible tools and devices.[5]

Storage room[]

Unused weapons, armor, and accessories were stored in this room of the fortress. Within time, a second storage room was also added, increasing the space to store things. The Brotherhood also used the rooms to stock the various materials they had gathered on missions undertaken throughout Spain.[1]

Library[]

The fortress' library allowed Assassins to research hidden knowledge and compile them into codices. The knowledge then contained within the codices was then used to train the Assassins further.[1]

Supply room[]

The Supply room backed onto a port attached to the fortress. In groups of two, Assassins would be sent on supply runs to gather either wood or stone, both materials being vital in renovations.[1]

Apothecary[]

Apothecary

The crafting of medicine to be used by injured Assassins was handled in this room.[1] The so-called "Mad Alchemist" Gershon Deloya used his skills in alchemy to assist the Brotherhood.[6]

History[]

Built by the Spanish army some decades prior, by the time of the Granada War during the Reconquista, the fortress had been abandoned and was in disrepair. In early 1489, Aguilar de Nerha claimed the fortress and built it up as the new base for the Spanish Brotherhood.[7] By 1498, the fortress had been completely renovated and housed more than sixty Assassins.[8]

Behind the scenes[]

The headquarters used by the Spanish Assassins is an unnamed location in the mobile game, Assassin's Creed: Rebellion as a main hub for all activities in the game. It bears resemblance to Castillo de la Yedra, a real landmark situated on the Sierra de Cazorla mountain range overlooking the town of La Iruela. The castle has former Moor and Templar heritage, and some smaller sections of the castle date back to the 11th century. Like the in-game equivalent, the Castillo de la Yedra also has three wings.[9]
