The Snake-Eaters were a branch of the Order of the Ancients that operated along the Silk Road in the 9th century, originating near Chang'an. Recognizable by their red clothing, the group earned the monicker of "soldiers in red".[1]

History[]

The Snake-Eaters were founded in the early 9th century by a Sogdian hero celebrated for uniting various tribes.[2] His marriage to a rich woman from Chang'an expanded his influence and bore him a son who became the leader of the group after the founder's passing.[1] After his death, his daughter Dunya became the leader,[3] and though she was not immediately accepted, she was able to extend their area of influence along the road reaching even Antioch.[1] Slowly, by building a number of caravanserais and repelling bandit groups, the Snake-Eaters established themselves as protectors, for a price. Meanwhile, they would also extort, blackmail and imprison to advance their agenda,[4] while also maintaining good relations with Chinese authorities, due to them preventing silkworm smuggling.[5]

In 870, the Snake-Eaters drove out the Hidden Ones from Antioch, causing Basim Ibn Ishaq to then send letters to other bureaus asking for help, being answered by the Hidden Ones in Chinon and Alexandria.[6] Later, as the group of Hidden Ones that answered Basim's request travelled along the Road, they reached a citadel belonging to the Snake-Eaters and fought Dunya, who was injured but survived,[7] and kidnapped Matthias, bringing the Hidden One to Chang'an.[8] Dunya, along with the remaining Snake-Eaters were finally defeated in Chang'an, eliminating the group.[8]
