Sminthos, also known as the Mouse, was a Greek merchant who lived in Cyrene during the 1st century BCE.
Biography[]
Owning little to no property in the city, which was part of the Roman province of Cyrenaica, Sminthos was classified as a proletarii and turned to surviving by racketeering in the agora, while owning a warehouse and a shop. While he was friendly with the children, Sminthos' social status and racketeering work led to harrasment by the Roman soldiers often times.[1]
In 48 BCE, Sminthos gained the acquaintance of the Medjay Bayek of Siwa while in the agora. Having caught the curiosity of the Medjay, Sminthos offered to take him to his shop and sell his products. Upon arriving at Sminthos' shop, the two were attacked by Roman soldiers, who also took possession of a chest belonging Sminthos. Bayek helped Sminthos to eliminate the soldiers and recover his chest from the barracks, returning it to him at his warehouse.[1]
Some timee later, Bayek freed Sminthos who had been arrested for the murder of Paulus Aurelius in the Cyrene Baths. To prove Sminthos' innocence, Bayek infiltrated the locked-down baths and investigated the murder scene.[2]
