"When deciding where our loyalties lie, we must consider the end."
―Skylax[src]

Skylax the Fair (died 420s BCE) was a member of the Peloponnesian League branch of the Cult of Kosmos during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography

Prior to the Peloponnesian War, Skylax served as a general in the Spartan Army and was married to a woman and had two children. After they died in an unknown accident, Skylax was approached by King Pausanias of Sparta, who was secretly a Sage in the Cult of Kosmos. Pausanias recruited Skylax into the cult, appointing him as the leader of the Abantis Islands, a group of islands under the control of Sparta. As a sign of his allegiance and loyalty, Skylax bore a mark of Peloponnesian royalty on his breastplate.[1]

Over the course of the war, Skylax was eventually hunted down and killed by the Spartan misthios Kassandra over the course of her quest to destroy the Cult.[2]

Personality and characteristics

Though Skylax was charismatic and generous enough for the people he led to walk into war, Skylax himself shied away from battle. He used his vast fortune to bribe his enemies to surrender or his allies in the League to answer to him. He would even make donations to Xerxes Military Fort in Lokris, giving them large amounts of money and various cases of wine in exchange for ensuring they allied with Sparta.[2]

Trivia

  • Skylax is a name most likely derived from the Ancient Greek words σκύλος ( skúlos) meaning 'skin, hide' or σκυλεύω (skyleuo) which means 'to get the spoils of war', also used specifically of stripping the armor and gear off of the fallen enemy. In modern Greek σκύλαξ (skúlax) means 'young dog, puppy'.
  • If Athens controls Abantis Islands and Skylax has not been killed before then, he would hide in the forest in of Artemision Point in Euboea and with either just a few or no guards around, making his assassination relatively easy. Players should note that, even though he is no longer the region's leader in this scenario, having any witnesses to his assassination (including other guards) will still incur a two-to-three helmet bounty for "killing a leader."
  • Skylax is the only member of the Peloponnesian League branch, including its Sage, who is not defeated as a requirement of the main story.
