- For skill trees in other Assassin's Creed games, see Skill tree.
The skill tree is an in-game user interface that allows the player to upgrade Basim Ibn Ishaq's weapons and abilities during his time training to become a Master Assassin in 9th century Baghdad. The skills are assigned to one of 3 trees, Phantom, Trickster, and Predator,[1] represented by a scorpion, a spider, and an eagle, respectively. Unlike the trees used in previous installments of the Assassin's Creed series, progression was linear and story-based rather than dependent on accumulating experience points.[2][3]

Behind the scenes[]
Each of the images for the skill categories utilize the anachronistic Diwani style of Islamic calligraphy developed in the later 16th century Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Suleiman I. The scorpion is an excerpt from an old proverb[4] that reads « لدغ العقارب لم يكن لعّلامة », or "Scorpions sting not out of hostility".[5] The spider reads « بنى بيت العنكبوت على وهن », or "The spider built a feeble and frail house",[6] and is based on the forty-first āyah in the Quran's twenty-ninth surah of Al-Ankabut (The Spider), which translated reads in full "The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of a spider spinning a shelter. And the flimsiest of all shelters is certainly that of a spider, if only they knew."[7] In contrast to the previous quotes of Arabic origin, the eagle is a slight change to the phrase "We work in the dark to serve the light" often spoken at an Assassin apprentice's initiation as it reads « ثم من الظلام تخرج نحو النور », or "From the dark, you will come into the light, then from the light, you will return to the dark".[8]
