Abstergo set 1

Sigma Team

Sigma Team is a paramilitary task force employed by Abstergo Industries, and its subsidiaries, for the purposes of executing clandestine operations.

Led by the Templar Juhani Otso Berg, Sigma Team was originally created to pursue and eliminate theose Assassins who survived the Great Purge. It has since gone on to function as a general kill-squad for Abstergo, operating in a number of different theatres.

History

In November 2012, Sigma Team attacked an Assassin cell in Florence, Italy. While the majority of Sigma Team was killed in an explosion, Berg escaped with some facial burns. The following month, Sigma Team was reformed and captured William Miles in Cairo, Egypt.[1] Although the mission was a success, a member of Sigma Team reported Berg's abnormal behavior to Laetitia England and Ctibor Hašek. After conducting a debriefing of the operation, Berg stated he would discover the insubordinate.[2]

In February 2014, Sigma Team tracked down Harlan Cunningham and Arend Schut after the two had stolen the Precursor box from Abstergo. Although the Assassins managed to escape, Sigma Team recovered the box. Nonetheless, the Templars had suffered severe losses, as Schut had managed to kill at least half the team. In September of that year, Laetitia disbanded and reassigned members of Sigma Team to other Abstergo operations. The following month, Berg requested that Laetitia revive his team, recounting his loss in Paris without the rest of his team. After being informed that Violet da Costa was busy in Montreal, Berg joined her in order to hasten her progress and get her to rejoin the team.[2]

In 2015, Violet briefly left Sigma Team on the orders of Isabelle Ardant to assist Álvaro Gramática with his research into the Shroud of Eden. Later on, Sigma Team went to London, England to track down a Shroud located there. Subsequently, Berg and Violet held Assassins Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings at gunpoint when they attempted to confront Isabelle. But before they could execute the Assassins, a set of pre-planted explosives went off, allowing the pair to escape. When the Assassins Shaun Hastings, Rebecca Crane, and Galina Voronina attacked Berg, da Costa and Isabelle Ardant in the chambers beneath Buckingham Palace, Sigma Team arrived to help them. However, they came too late to save Ardant and were single-handedly eliminated by Galina, allowing the Assassins to escape.[3]

Huntinng down Layla Hassan

In October 2017, Abstergo Industries sent Deanna Geary and Layla Hassan to Egypt to recover an artifact, instructing them to regularly contact. As they failed to report in on their findings, the Sigma was dispatched to locate both of them. The team stormed the hotel that Deanna was in, capturing her. They were also sent to the Hotep Cavern, where Layla was located in, with orders to eliminate her. However, due to the Bleeding Effect, Layla was able to single-handedly take them down.[4]

In late 2018, Berg and Sigma Team were sent to track down Layla during her search for the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus. They tracked down the Altaïr II, which had been used by Layla Hassan's cell to search for Atlantis. Despite wounding Kiyoshi Takakura, the Japanese Assassin was able to eliminate them, keeping both Alannah Ryan and Victoria Bibeau safe.[5]

Berg and Layla facing off

Despite the Assassins' efforts, Berg was able to track down Layla in the Great Seal to Atlantis, sending a team of operatives to eliminate her and Victoria during her Animus session in Hades. After the operatives were repelled,[6] Berg personally travelled to the room itself, confronting Layla and demanding her to hand over the staff. Berg was defeated by Layla, who then proceed to impale Berg's back with the Staff, leaving him unable to feel his legs and pass out from the blood lost.[7]
