Shinobu playing music in the hideout
Shinobu was a Japanese musician who lived in Iga with her husband Monta during the late 16th century.
Biography[]
Following Oda Nobunaga's conquest of Iga in September 1581, Shinobu and her husband fled west to Izumi Settsu. After some time, they arrived outside a homestead belonging to a woman named Tomiko, where they met fellow Igan Fujibayashi Naoe. Monta expressed happiness at her survival and informed her of the fate of many of their former neighbours. Naoe then invited Monta and Shinobu to stay at the homestead, which she intended to develop into a community. They accepted the offer, volunteering to help out as scouts and gather information for her.[1]
In addition to her role as a scout, Shinobu also served as the community's local musician, playing her flute for Naoe and her allies at the hideout's entrance. In turn, Naoe would travel across Japan to learn of new songs that Shinobu could play for the group.[2]
