Shinji (died 1582), also known as The Interrogator, was a Japanese criminal and member of a Tamba silver-smuggling ring during the 16th century.
Biography[]
By 1582, Shinji worked as part of a silver-smuggling operation under their leader Mai as her enforcer and the operation's security. He used torture and brutal probing methods to gather information from anyone looking into their criminal affairs. However, his actions were soon caught by a spy working under Lord Hosokawa Fujitaka.[1]
The Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke met with Lord Fujitaka, who asked them for help due to his silver business being exploited. With the help of his retainer Yoshisada, Fujitaka gave Naoe and Yasuke information about his spy working with one of the smugglers.[1]
Covering his tracks, Shinji ambushed and killed Fujitaka's spy and then hid within cave near Onitake Shrine. However, Naoe and Yasuke discovered the spy's corpse and followed traces of blood into the cave. Both Naoe and Yasuke confronted Shinji, who was harshly interrogating a captured rōnin, and subsequently assassinated him. They then recovered a message from Mai to Shinji and the katana, the Silver Ace, from Shinji's personal effects.[1]
