"Our so-called King meets with his Templar advisers in London. Shall we pay them a visit?"
―Robert Fitzwalter calling for John's disposal.[src]

Robert Fitzwalter (died 1235) was the baron of the village of Little Dunmow in Essex, England, and the leader of the English Brotherhood of Assassins during the early 13th century.

Biography[]

Campaign against King John[]

Originally an aristocrat and valiant soldier in the service of King John during the tumultuous wars in Normandy. By 1215, Fitzwalter chose to sever ties with the monarch when he witnessed a blatant abuse of royal authority,[1] and the attempted seduction of his eldest daughter two years prior.[2] Taking a bold stance, Fitzwalter emerged as the chief instigator of the baronial uprising against King John. Initiating strategic consultations with his fellow Assassins, Fitzwalter orchestrated a meticulous plan to dethrone the despotic ruler. Setting out on a resolute campaign, he endeavored to unite the English barons in a collective effort to compel King John to abdicate. The ensuing conflict escalated into a full-fledged civil war, prompting the beleaguered barons to seek assistance from France in their quest for justice and liberation.[1]

Legacy[]

In 2015, the Templar Isabelle Ardant included his name on a list of known British Assassins. This list was later unveiled by the Assassins Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings when they infiltrated Ardant's office to plant a bug.[3]
