Pride of the Aesir was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Basim Ibn Ishaq in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, in which a vision of one of Odin's memories could be seen.
Description[]
Havi went to speak with Brokkr and Ivaldi about their work on the Salakar.
Dialogue[]
Havi entered Hodda Shelter
- Havi: Hopefully the dwarves have gained an understanding of the Salakar's true use. My future may depend on it... Ragnarök is inevitable. To avoid it, impossible. But if there is one thing I know..."impossible" is impossible.
He went to speak with Brokkr and Ivaldi.
- Brokkr: Oh, you're back.
- Havi: Sinmara's plans lie in ruins.
- Ivaldi: I just hope you know what you're doing.
- Havi: Surely I should be asking that of you? Now tell me, what does it do?
- Brokkr: Ain't got a clue. These Light Elves and their sneaky―
- Havi: You've learned nothing?
- Ivaldi: Whatever its use, the power it contains... it holds more than what you said.
- Havi: Such as?
- Brokkri: Well, for a start, there's a bloody dwarf in there.
Havi slightly paused.
- Havi: ...Anyone we know?
- Ivaldi: Nah, and it's not important. Dwarf hugrs don't carry much weight. Not even mine.
- Havi: So, what does it contain?
- Brokkr: All I know is that it's more than Malvigr, Calder, and some dwarf no one cares about.
- Havi: Fine. In the stories, what was the actual point of the Salakars?
- Ivaldi: Hugrs were what vitalized them, but it was the magic that gave them their purpose. And that magic was different to each one.
- Havi: "Magic?" You mean seidr?
- Ivaldi: Nah, some elf shit no one knows anymore.
- Havi: Except Surtr.
- Brokkr: That fire nymph? She sent word.
- Havi: And?
- Brokkr: Your plan worked. Sinmara's ready to barter if it means getting you out of the way.
- Havi: Where?
- Brokkr: At the bridge leading to Feigardr. Light the beacon and she'll come out with your lad.
Havi grabbed the Salakar.
- Ivaldi: The power that the Salakar holds... it must not fall into Surtr's grasp.
- Havi: I'll reclaim it. Once Baldr is safe.
Havi began to leave with the Salakar.
- Brokkr: I've got a bad feeling about this.
- Ivaldi: For once, we're in agreement.
Havi traveled to meet Sinmara.
- Havi: Retaking the Salakar won't be easy. I may have to release Loki, and ask for his aid. His talent for theft is unmatched. What I have done to him, and him to me... Once I have rescued Baldr, we will be even. Loki will see that.
Havi arrived at Feigardr.
- Havi: I must announce my arrival.
Havi lit the beacon at the entrance. Havi walked forward as Sinmara walked out with Eysa holding a captive Baldr.
- Sinmara: Do you bring that which is Surtr's?
- Havi: Give me what is mine! And I will hand over what is his!
- Sinmara: Come midway!
Havi walked closer as Sinmara nodded to release Baldr. Eysa cut Baldr free as he walked towards Havi. Havi threw the Salakar as he walked towards his son. Baldr fell to his knees as Havi caught him.
- Havi: ...Baldr, I got you. I got you.
Eysa and Sinmara walked inside as Havi's embrace began to tighten. Baldr's eyes were turning blue and soon it was revealed to be jötunn warrior in disguise. The jötunn headbutted Havi, who began to fight against the ambush.
Havi survived the ambush and barged inside the fortress.
- Havi: Baldr! Baldr! I must get inside!
Havi ventured further within Feigardr.
- Havi: Baldr must be close for the illusion to have worked.
Havi searched for an opening with its prison and found an entrance on top. Havi fought through two Muspel guards and went inside the prison.
- Havi: Baldr is behind one of these doors. Locked cells... I must find the proper keys.
Havi investigated the cells and found writings on the wall.
- Havi: It's written in Baldr's hand! No light but only darkness visible... revealing sights of woe, realms of endless agony. This hopelessness... It is not the Baldr I know, no matter his pain and turmoil.
Havi ventured within a meeting room and found a note to the prison guards.
Note to Guards
- 1. Remember what each key is for —
Ruby Key - red section
Sapphire Key - blue section
Amber Key - orange section
Skull Key - torture chamber
Sword Key - overseer's chambers
2. There's rumors some prisoners are making weapons. Keep an eye out.
3. The Emerald Key is missing. I've ordered that locksmith dwarf to create a new one.
- Overseer Grakhil
Havi noticed and took all the keys in the room.
- Havi: One of the many prison keys... Not all of them are here, it seems.
Havi checked the cells and found one with something amiss along its walls.
- Havi: I think there's something hidden in the back. The prisoners weren't just lying around.
Havi moved the large rock that blocked the hole to a hidden room. Inside, he found a number of boxes with some spare coins and another note.
Secret Letter
- My Comrades!
Wait for me to get the right keys. The guards have grown suspicious and I can't snatch the keys as easily as before.
–Blinkin
Havi left and continued exploring the prison, finding the bodies of multiple dead dwarves.
- Havi: So much death. The Muspels don't take no for an answer.
Havi found another cell with a secret bolthole.
- Havi: A hidden room behind this wall? It seems nothing can contain these tricky inventors.
Havi read the secret letter within the cell.
Secret Letter
- Comrades!
The guards are onto us, and tonight will be our last chance to make our move!
Blinkin wasn't looking too well after his portal jumps. But he's given me instructions on where to find the stashed tools and weapons, along with the key to his cell.
We'll gather in the Amber Cell as usual!
- Havi: Ugh! I guess I shouldn't touch every piece of paper I find lying around.
Breaking into the hidden room, Havi found the Emerald Key. Havi looked around and found a note about Baldr from Calder.
Calder's Notes
- A most impressive specimen. Mystifying impervious to all... All except mistletoe. And while every cut left no mark, it was clear he felt each of them. That, and the fear. The delicious, inescapable fear. Indeed, it only increased when he saw I was just as resilient as he.
Now that we have forced enough mistletoe down his meticulously pristine gullet, he is far more malleable. Even his screams reached a greater purity, almost lyrical.
And the sound as his perfectly-rounded skull lightly cracked within the vice. Exquisite. And so very apt, given the appearance of the key to the chamber that now holds him.
So while I cannot fathom as to why nothing could harm him, with enough pieces of the boy, I can begin to speculate as to how. Who knows—given the time and resources, perhaps I can bestow his gift unto others.
I must also commend Surtr's right hand. Her suggestion to prepare mother and son for the Deceiver's arrival was a touch of rare genius.
- Havi: Truly, Calder!? Truly!? You dare to torture my own flesh and blood!? If only I could bring you back from the dead and kill you all over again!
Havi soon found a blood trail near a locked door.
- Havi: This blood trail... Whoever was dragged here was badly wounded... Yet he was strong. It took at least four jailers to hold him. There! Beyond that door lies the dark heart of the prison... and my son.
Havi unlocked the door and found a chamber below with two bodies.
Havi: No... No!
Nearing closer, Havi noticed that Baldr was dead and was cradled by Frigg's corpse, which had been kept after her murder. Holding Baldr close to him, a grieving Havi saw the corpse open its eyes and speak with Sinmara's voice.
- Sinmara: The High One. Brought low. Mistletoe...
Sinmara, Eysa, and three guards entered the cell from behind Havi. The All-Father looked anew at Baldr's corpse and saw it remained pallid, beaten, and lifeless, his delirium having made him imagine it moving. Sinmara continued gloating.
- Sinmara: ...symbol of hope. Renewal... but not for Baldr. We forced so many drafts down his gullet. His torment was... quite beautiful. Blind fool! You never saw what was in front of you.
Three spears were put to Havi's face as Sinmara took out the Salakar before him.
- Sinmara: Here is your child. His light gone before you even set foot here! And the rest of him? It now skulks in Helheim. Allow me to reunite you with your boy.
Sinmara pulled back Havi's head to slit his throat with her sword, but before she could kill him, Eysa rushed forward and stabbed her in the forearm.
- Eysa: No!
Sinmara quickly countered Eysa.
- Sinmara: Traitor!
Sinmara killed Eysa and her body disintegrated.
- Sinmara: You were never worth my effort.
Sinmara leaned over a grief-stricken Havi.
- Sinmara: I've seen dwarves with better stature.
Sinmara began to walk away and chuckled.
- Sinmara: Take care of it.
Havi opened his eyes and quickly killed all three of the Muspel guards. In shock, Sinmara looked to her arm where Eysa had wounded her as Havi looked her way.
- Sinmara: Damn you, Eysa!
Havi chased after Sinmara.
- Sinmara: I remember how Frigg's soft flesh parted beneath my blade! Thank you, Mad One! For giving me cause to stamp out my traitorous stepdaughter!
Havi chased Sinmara down flights of stairs deeper into the prison to a lava chamber.
- Sinmara: Finally. The hero of Asgard. But you are an imposter! Heart as black as tar. Savage. Monstrous. You've locked that truth away. Built a code to act as its jailer. But the darkness cannot be kept hidden. It oozes out, like pus from a wound, poisoning everything it touches. That is what it means to be Odin the Deceiver.
Havi immediately fought Sinmara.
- Sinmara: You never fail to disappoint!
You cluck and scratch like an old hen!
If you're going to fight, fight!
After an intense fight, Havi defeated Sinmara. As Sinmara's body disintegrated, Havi collected the Salakar and wept over his lost son. Soon, he saw visions of Calder, Sinmara, Glöð, and Malvigr. Havi attacked Sinmara's apparition in his mind, while he wept on his knees.
- Havi: (laugh)
Havi began attacking the apparitions of his fallen foes, yet they kept reappearing to him. Soon, Eivor woke from her vision inside the Seer's Hut as Valka went towards her.
- Eivor: Aaah!
- Valka: What is it? What did you see?
- Eivor: All my struggles mattered nothing in the end. My son was lost before I began, his premonition come to pass.
- Valka: Your son?
- Eivor: Baldr! Havi's son. You know what I mean!
- Valka: So Baldr met his fate, as was foretold. Ever you have sought to elude the looms of the Nornir, but we are all caught in their weave.
- Eivor: No, I will not believe it. There is more to see yet. Why was I thrown from my dream?
- Valka: Perhaps it was not the vision that rejected you, but you who rejected the vision. Perhaps you are afraid of it.
- Eivor: I fear nothing!
- Valka: I think you do! And until you recognize that fear, give in to it, embrace it... the vision will not return. Some walls cannot be overcome by potions alone.
- Eivor: Tell me what I must do. This saga does not end here. It cannot!
- Valka: Meet me in the forest where darkness lays upon the land. There we shall see how fearless you truly are.
Eivor left Valka.
- Eivor: These new visions of Odin trouble me. Am I alone in seeing them? Or do the tales of Svartalfheim hold some other meaning? Perhaps I should warm my bones by the fire, gather my thoughts for a moment.
Outcome[]
Havi saw his son had already died when he came to rescue him. In his grief, Havi killed Sinmara over her part and wept over his fallen loved ones. Awakening from her vision, Eivor was confused and beside herself over waking up abruptly.
