"So many boats, so many people! There must be enough food here to feed Kephallonia for a year."
―Kassandra[src]

The Port of Piraeus served as the main port of Athens, Greece during the 5th century BCE. During the classical period, the port was a socially and econonically seperate world and played a critical role in Athen's impact as a naval power, as it was where most of the Athenian ships were built.

The city was split into three distinctive areas: military, commercial, and residential.

History

During the Peloponnesian War, the Sparta misthios Kassandra helped to escort the sculptor Phidias through the port to escape from Athens to Seriphos.[1]
