Plutarch (c. 46 – c. 120), also known as Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus once he became a Roman citizen, was a Greek priest, philosopher and writer.

He is best remembered for Parallel Lives, in which he coupled several biographies of notable Greeks, each with a Roman counterpart.

Biography[]

Circa 100, Plutarch published Moralia, a collection of 78 essay covering many subjects. One such was titled On Isis and Osiris, in which Plutarch gives the most simplified and complete summary of the story of the Egyptian myth of Isis and Osiris.[1] In his collection of biographies, Parallell Lives published sometime during the 2nd century, Plutarch noted in the Life of Antony section how Cleopatra was the only Ptolemaic ruler to speak the Egyptian language.[2]

Legacy[]

During the early 16th century, the Assassins Ezio Auditore bought a copy of this book from a book shop in Constantinople.[3]
