"Wealth, power, ambition… such things I have seen in my short time on earth, and reveled in them. Such things are the wonders of man."
―Part of Odai's last words, 1511.[src]-[m]

Odai Dunqas (died 1511) was a cousin of the first Sultan of the Sennar Sultanate, and a member of the Byzantine Rite of the Templar Order.

In 2012, his genetic memories were used as an Animi Avatar by the Templar company Abstergo Industries, for the training of their Animus recruits, under the title of the Guardian.

Biography[]

Becoming the Guardian[]

In 1505, Odai was driven from his homeland under unknown circumstances and became estranged from his family. Somehow relocating to Alexandria, Odai first encountered the Templar philosophy, of which he embraced, and called himself "The Guardian of the Truth." Soon after, he joined the Templars in the hopes of making his ambitions a reality.[1]

Bribery[]

With the knowledge that bribes were occurring in the markets near to the Constantine South den where they were based, an Apprentice of the Assassin Order's Mentor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, soon reported to him of the circumstances happening.[2]

Arriving at a marketplace, Ezio soon found Odai, though he was unaware of his identity at the time, who had just finished talking with a merchant. After this, Ezio then scoped out all of the bribery money that had been given to the nearby merchants with his Eagle Sense, and decided to pay a visit to Odai's consorter after inquiring about them with a nearby man, subsequently learning that the consorter's name was Theodorus Komnenos.[2]

With his Apprentice in tow, Ezio free-ran across the rooftops until he came to Theodorus' residence, while remaining unseen and sneaking in unnoticed to converse with the benefactor.[2]

Once Ezio mentioned that he and his Apprentice were Assassins, Theodorus panicked at their arrival and hastily pleaded for his life. With the man reduced to little more than that of a whimpering wuss, Ezio decided to leave his Apprentice with him, so that they could get the information they both required once Theodorus had calmed down.[2]

Death[]

Meeting up with Theodorus once again, Ezio caught him explaining Odai and his fellow Templars' misdeeds, telling the two Assassins of their plans to keep prices so high in the Assassin-controlled districts so that the public's opinion would turn against them.[3]

While Ezio and his Apprentice tailed Theodorus to the meeting point, Odai engaged in a conversation with him, where he stated that Theodorus could have a permanent position of wealth in Alexandria if he continued to work with the Templars. Theodorus was speechless at first, but soon revealed to Odai that the Assassins had followed him.[3]

In frustration, Odai stabbed the man and had his bodyguard throw his corpse onto the street. Acting quickly, Ezio sent his Apprentice after Odai, while he chased and assassinated the bodyguard. Rushing back to aid his Apprentice, Ezio found Odai attempting to flee, so he quickly blocked the Guardian's path.[3]

With the man cornered, Ezio watched as his Apprentice assassinated Odai, and, in his last moments, Odai told the two Assassins that they had completed his life, honoring him by striking him down.[3]

Trivia[]

  • Odai (عُدي) is an Arabic name derived from the Sanskrit उदय (uday) "to rise, ascend".
  • Odai Dunqas is identical in appearance to Qasim al-Dani, an original character of Assassin's Creed: Rebellion. This is one of several cases where characters of Rebellion appear to be cloned from a Multiplayer avatar. Unlike Odai, Qasim is a Moorish Assassin.
