Nathanael Greene (1742 – 1786) was an American military officer who served under Commander-in-Chief George Washington in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Biography[]
In the winter of 1777–1778, Nathanael was with the army when they camped at Valley Forge. Thousands were dying from starvation, cold, and diseases due to the lack of food and poor housing, and Greene was appointed as quartermaster to help remedy this situation. In this capacity, he was chiefly responsible for procuring supplies and delivered on this job sufficiently for the army to emerge strong enough for battle by spring.[1]
In 1780, as Greene was suffering defeats on the battlefield, the Assassin Connor sent his recruits to advise him. Their counsel helped him to win the Battle of Springfield and secure New Jersey.[2] The following year, Greene sent Otho Williams to scout Banastre Tarleton and his dragoons, leading to the Battle of Wetzell's Mill, which the Assassins also intervened in.[3]
