Musō Soseki (1275 – 1351)[1] was a Japanese Buddhist monk and teacher, being the mentor to shōgun Ashikaga Takauji.[2] Musō was responsible for the restauration of Saihō-ji and for the construction of Tenryū-ji, Zen Buddhist temples in Kyoto. He became the first chief priest at Tenryū-ji,[3] and established a garden there, arguing that one could attain enlightenment not just by meditating but also by creating beautiful art.[2]
