Mitsumune was a Japanese monk and a member of the Ikkō-ikki during the late 16th century.
Biography[]
Resistance against Oda Nobunaga[]
A survivor from the war against Oda Nobunaga's army, Mitsumune led a small group of sōhei from the Ishiyama Hongan-ji, continuing the sect's fight against Nobunaga's retainer Wada Koretake. While in northern Izumi Settsu, Mitsumune and his men fought in a clash against a group of bandits, who stole a prized statue of Shinran that Kyonyo had tasked him to protect. The bandits took it to the Toneyama Post Town, which they had turned into their lair. Faced with exhaustion and a lack of manpower, Mitsumune had no choice but to retreat and take shelter at the Nunobiki Falls.[1]
While taking refuge at the waterfall, Mitsumune was visited by the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe, whom Kyonyo had sent to find recruits for an assault against Koretake's army. While Mitsumune admired Naoe's courage, he remarked that Kyonyo would not want his aid, for he had lost the statue of Shinran that he was entrusted to protect. Seeking to gain his support, Naoe volunteered to recover the statue.[1]
True to her word, Naoe returned some time later with the statue in her hand. While Mitsumune was grateful for her effort, he commented that his followers would think otherwise, for too much blood had been lost due to the statue. He then asked that Naoe take the statue to Kyonyo, and assured her that his group would fight alongside Kyonyo when the time came.[1]
Assault on Amagasaki Castle[]
Sometime later, Mitsumune and his men joined Naoe, Kyonyo, and Yaya in Amagasaki, where Wada Koretake's stronghold was located. After expressing surprise at seeing Yaya, Mitsumune claimed that he had almost considered giving up, until Naoe helped change his mind. On Naoe's signal, the group then commenced their assault on the fortress, during which Mitsumune and his men fought Koretake's soldiers to allow Naoe to reach and assassinate her target.[2]
Following their victory, Mitsumune's men rounded up the last of Koretake's soldiers for execution. As Mitsumune was about to kill one of the captive soldiers, he was stopped by Naoe, Kyonyo, and Yaya. The latter expressed her disgust at the needless display of violence and claimed that this was Oda Nobunaga's way, not theirs. Mitsumune disagreed and insisted that he was simply exacting retribution for every innocent soul who had died because of Nobunaga. When asked about her opinion on the matter, Naoe agreed with Mitsumune and said that no one serving Nobunaga deserved mercy, prompting one of the monks to execute the soldier.[2]
After Yaya declared that they were all beyond saving and left, Kyonyo ordered that all the remaining soldiers be let go. Mitsumune complied, though not before criticizing Kyonyo's leadership, pointing out that he ordered his men to fight one moment and asked them to "sign peace treaties with demons" the next. Mitsumune then told Naoe that he hoped all the blood his men had spilled for her was worth it, before leaving alongside his followers.[2]
