Metiochos was an Athenian politician and a loyal friend of Perikles who lived during the 5th century BCE.
Biography[]
During the Peloponnesian War after Metiochos failed to meet with Perikles, the statesman sent the Spartan misthios Kassandra to check on his friend. When Kassandra reached Metiochos' home, she found him tied up and threatened by poisonous snakes. She slew the reptiles, and released Metiochos, saving his life.[1]
Metiochos asked Kassandra find out who was behind the attempt on his life. According to Metiochos, the men had hurled rotten food and insults at him when he'd visited the poor quarter; when they attacked him at his home, he recognized their voices and the stench. Kassandra followed the clues Metiochos had given her, and ultimately found the ones responsible, as well as the one who had provided the snakes.[1]
