The banner of Messenia

Messenia is a regional unit of Greece situated in the southwestern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. It is a historical kingdom which was annexed by Sparta during the Peloponnesian War, its people being enslaved and their home transformed into a war factory for Peloponnesian League.

Prior to the Spartan conquest, Messenia was a prosperous land with lush vegetation. During the Peloponnesian War the Spartans mobilized all of the region's resources towards its war effort, and its environment was devastated by the unfettered exploitation of its resources. Factories and warehouses for the mass production of military equipment and siege weapons dominated the area, leading to over-mining and deforestation.[1]

History

In 425 BCE, the Battle of Pylos was fought in the southwestern corner of the region during the Peloponnesian War. The misthios Kassandra and her brother Deimos took part in the battle, fighting on opposite sides: Kassandra for Sparta and Deimos for Athens. Despite her assistance, the Spartans loss the battle and the region was taken over by the Athenians.[2]

The Spartans would continue making numerous attempts to regain the region, especially around 422 BCE, where they were backed by the Order of Dominion, a branch of the Order of the Ancients from Persia. However, the Order was secretly consolidating strength in preparation for a future conquest of the region, and subsequently the Greek world.[3]

Later that year, the proto-Assassin Darius travelled to Messenia to gain revenge on the Order for the death of his son Natakas and grandson Elpidios. Kassandra arrived not long after, having Darius to recruit an Athenian general and killing several members of the Order to draw out Amorges. While the general died in battle at the Andania Mine, Darius and Kassandra were able to defeat Amorges and learned that Elpidios was alive and located on an island south of Messenia.[3]

Trivia

  • The emblem of Messenia is a stylized image of the god Zeus ready to cast a lightning bolt.
  • Ubisoft has had trouble with the similarity between Messenia and Messara. All images of the Minotaur for example are tagged to be in Messenia instead of Messara in the Photo Mode. The Bandit Lord Helmet's description also confuses the two, claiming that Captain Diokles "won't be terrorizing Messenia anymore".
