The Mengshan Giant Buddha

The Mengshan Giant Buddha (蒙山大佛), also known as the Giant Buddha of the West Mountain (西山大佛),[1] is a colossal statue of a buddha sculpted out of the side of Mount Meng in Taiyuan, China.[1]

It was erected under the Northern Qi. According to Tang-era records, it was "200-feet" tall,[2] which made it the second largest Buddha statue in the world at the time. Its head was hollowed out to form at least one chamber, with its eyes serving as windows. However, it was not an uncommon practice for criminals to be housed in Buddhist temples in this period, and so when the Hidden One Li E was captured by the Golden Turtles in Taiyuan, this very chamber served as his prisoner cell.[1]

  2. This is in Tang-era measurements. It may not be known for certain how long a foot in this period was, but the Baike article on the Mengshan Giant Buddha calculates that it was 59 metres assuming that a Tang foot was equivalent to 0.295 metres. The Chinese Wikipedia article also gives the same figure.
