Masha was the younger sister of Bolour and Roshan. She was married to the Mongolian merchant Bogd as his youngest spouse.

Biography[]

When Masha was a child, she would get seizures, leading her mother to collect onyx stones, which she believed was the best way to treat it.[1] She eventually outgrew her "fits" after puberty.[2] In 816, a Persian harbor master came to Kandovan looking for a wife. Roshan offered herself up, seeking to save both Masha and Bolour from a grim fate, having realized what kind of men he was. In preparation for Roshan's departure, Masha and Bolour made her necklaces and bracelets which she promised to treasure forever, though her husband later destroyed all but one of them,[3] a bracelet of glass beads in her sisters' favorite colors.[4]

Some time around 823, Masha married Bogd, having to take the first offer that came, after Bolour married for love. The youngest of three wives, Masha moved to Tabriz and her husband forbid her from seeing the rest of her family. Roshan, having learned of Masha's mistreatment by her husband, intervened through Dervis, offering to clear Bogd's debts to loan sharks on the condition that he released Masha, which he accepted. Dervis later guided a frail Masha to meet with Bolour and her husband Amon, with the two sisters having a tearful reunion while Roshan watched from afar. Amon then began to guide the women down the road when a street urchin handed them a pouch of garnets sent by Roshan to help take care of their family.[2]
