Malvigr was an Isu jötunn who operated as an assassin for Suttungr and was reputed to be his right-hand.

Biography[]

At some point, Malvigr came to blows with Odin of Asgard's son Víðarr. It was a brutal clash but Malvigr eventually won out and, impressed by his ability, she spared his life. She was injured to the point she had to be carried away by her acolytes. For his part, however, Víðarr returned to the Æsir in disgrace.[3]

By the time of the Muspel invasion of Svartálfaheimr, Malvigr had lost a child.[3] Operating under the orders of Suttungr, the assassin was sent into the conflict to hunt down the dwarves Fjalar and Galar to avenge their role in the death of Suttungr's father.[3]

Despite the coalition between Múspellsheimr and Jötunheimr forces,[4][5] Malvigr was uneasy with the alliance.[3] Muspel war lord Surtr's motives were cloudy at best, so when Malvigr learned that Odin, himself an enemy of Suttungr and a better known quantity, was also in the realm, she considered reaching out to him for a partnership.[6]

However, to her surprise, Fjalar and Galar instead sought her out, hoping that their own information would stay her hand against them: Odin had the Salakar and was looking to trade it to Surtr so the Muspel would return his captured son Baldr, but he needed a worthy jötunn hugr to complete the relic. She executed the dwarves and awaited the king of Asgard's arrival.[3]

Of singular focus, Odin rejected Malvigr's offer of working together to foil Surtr's efforts, deeming the risk of lose Baldr too great to bear. The pair fought and the Æsir claimed victory. He agreed that Malvigr did not deserve the Salakar as her fate, and then drained the jötunn's hugr anyway.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Malvigr does not seem to be a figure derived from real-world Norse mythology. As the jötnar in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla are analogs of Isu represented as the Roman gods from previous titles in the franchise, she may be have already been introduced under another name.
