Mai (died 1582), also known as The Smuggler Leader, was a Japanese smuggler and the leader of a Tamba silver-smuggling ring during the 16th century.

Biography[]

By 1582, Mai was contacted by Lord Hosokawa Fujitaka's second-in-command Yoshisada to take charge of a silver-smuggling operation under his lord's nose. Composed of both Portuguese traders and Akechi clan members, the operation mainly sought to steal and to use the silver to buy teppō, which was then sold to bandits at a higher cost. However, Mai was soon betrayed by Yoshisada, whose operation was discovered by Lord Fujitaka, as he tried to eliminate Mai and her cohorts to cover his tracks.[1]

When the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke met with Lord Hosokawa Fujitaka, he tasked them to dismantle the silver-smuggling ring. Following a message from Takeru's personal effects, they traveled to the brewery in Himeji where Mai conducted her business.[1]

Finding a note, Naoe and Yasuke discovered her location in northern part of the city and found her at her mansion. There, they confronted Mai, who welcomed and asked them to wait while she finished writing. Immediately after, they fought and killed Mai and then acquired a naginata, Glimmering Sway, and an unsent letter to Yoshisada, revealing his betrayal, from her personal effects.[1]
