Louis VIII (5 September 1187 – 8 November 1226), known as Louis the Lion, was a King of France from the House of Capet who reigned from 1223 to his death.
In 1215, English barons under the Assassin Robert Fitzwalter rebelled against the Templar-influenced King John. Louis, a prince at the time, was offered the English throne by the barons, and was proclaimed King of England.[1] After Eustace the Monk failed to deliver supplies to him, he was unable to hold England and forced to renounce his claims to the throne.[2] Following his death, Louis was succeeded as King of France by his son, Louis IX.[3]
