Liberation is a 2012 video game developed in partnership by Abstergo Entertainment and Ubisoft. The game follows the story of Aveline de Grandpré, daughter of the wealthy French merchant Philippe de Grandpré and his placée bride Jeanne.[1]

Development[]

Compiled from recordings collected from Subject 1,[2] the game presents a heavily distorted view of Aveline's life, as it portrays positively her false defection from the Assassins to the Templars; in response to this, the hacking collective known as Erudito actively worked to re-introduce the truth into the game, allowing the player to view the full extent of Aveline's genetic memories.[1]

Despite Erudito's actions, Liberation was considered such a success that it prompted Abstergo Industries to expand their entertainment branch to Montreal and hire research analysts for their next project.[3] The Montreal office has advertisements for the game routinely displayed on its walls and screens.[4]

In August 2014, Abstergo Entertainment's CCO Melanie Lemay sent an email to Kristina Uhrich about a possible follow up to Liberation, having found footage of the Louisiana Assassin Aveline de Grandpré's time in New England, though recognized that it would take some resources they did not have at the time.[5] The sequel game was later released on Helix as The Liberation of Lady Aveline.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

Liberation is the in-universe counterpart to the real-world video game Assassin's Creed III: Liberation released by Ubisoft. Though usually referred to by its proper name, in the player's Employee Passport, the game is referred to as Assassin's Creed III: Liberation.

In Assassin's Creed: Unity, the Helix menu used the image of Aveline in New Orleans. But Assassin's Creed: Rogue revealed the activity of The Liberation of Lady Aveline was set in New England which refers to the Aveline DLC for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
