The Les Tourelles was one of the fortified towers and gatehouses of Orléans, France.

History[]

By the end of the Siege of Orléans, the tower was under the command of the English captain William Glasdale, who vowed to kill everyone in the city.[1] On 7 May 1429, the English soldiers stood strong and fortified the boulevards more but the French aimed their artillery at the palisades. With the debris and dying soldiers becoming the foundation of a makeshift bridge, the French led by Jeanne d'Arc started to climb against the wall until Jeanne was hit by a crossbow. Initially injured, she was carried off until she took out the bolt herself. After a temporary setback, Jeanne came back out to fight and unleashed her sword while a big explosion occurred.[2]

With a boulevard destroyed, Jeanne led the soldiers and the people of Orléans against the remaining English soldiers. While most of the English fled, the rest offered their surrender. Jeanne recovered her heralds Ambleville and Guyenne while she explained she planned a charge under the drawbridge, which led to the death of Glasdale himself. From this victory, the French claimed Les Tourelles.[2]
