Leo Wallin (died 1860s) was a former Swedish soldier and the ringleader of Aurora Equestrian Troupe. He was also the father of Tillie Wallin and guardian of Pierrette Arnaud after her parents' death.
Biography[]
Early years[]
Very few details were known of Wallin's past, except that he used to be part of the military as a cavalry officer and held the rank of major. From his travels, he later found employment as a ringleader of the Aurora Equestrian Troupe, whose name came from his Italian wife, Aurora. In 1843, he and Aurora had a daughter named Tillie.[1] By 1848, while in Paris, he met and became acquainted with Marie Arnaud and her husband, who asked the major to take care of their daughter as they went to the Paris protests.[2] After they lost their lives, Wallin became the guardian to Pierrette. Years passed, he unfortunately lost his wife.[1]
Troupe days[]
In 1851, he led his troupe at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace as he relented in giving Pierrette the lead role as Mazeppa. During their acts, Major Wallin made sure everything went well even if Pierrette left her act abruptly.[1] As time went on and the Great Exhibition ended, Wallin continued to perform in London as their acts kept adapting and being successful.[2] By 1853, Wallin, convinced by Arnaud, moved his troupe as to avoid warfare between England and France versus Russia.[3]
Traveling through Europe, Wallin agreed to many changes, such as Ariel Fine and Hugh Robinson new comedy knife-throwing act. Soon, he and his circus arrived and played in Vienna, Austria. After one night of performances, he stopped Simeon Price, who barged in to find and meet Pierrette. Luckily, Wallin let Price go as Arnaud offered to deal with him.[3] After the troupe's stay in Vienna, he and his troupe found themselves on the road again and going across Europe once more. However, while in Prague, both he and Tillie became sick with typhoid fever.[4]
Although they both recovered, Wallin fell ill once again in Frankfurt and grew even sicker with delusions. Although the doctor helped him, Wallin was told to retire as his heart's stability had deteriorated. Wallin later retracted most of his duties as he stepped down as ringleader.[4] By 1857, he was out of the limelight and recuperated as the troupe found a permanent base in Birmingham. However, he later pleaded for Pierrette to stay as she left after finding a clue about the Magus.[5]
Death[]
Between 1857 and 1860, Wallin succumbed to his poor health as the Aurora Equestrian Troupe discontinued. The former manager, Nell Robinson, sent a letter to Arnaud, who left before his death.[6]
