Mercia was an Anglo-Saxon kingdom which dominated what is now England for a few centuries during the Dark Ages. During the Viking expansion in the late 9th century, a large portion of Mercia came under the domination of the Vikings which ultimately to the establishment of Danelaw that included East Anglia.

It was later absorbed by Wessex before being united into the Kingdom of England.

History[]

Pre-Viking expansion[]

Mercia was founded with the merger of various Anglo-Saxon tribes in the early 6th century, with most sources citing its first king as Icel, who founded the dynasty that ruled the kingdom for various centuries until the 8th century.[1]

In 675, King Wulfhere of Mercia led the kingdom south to invade Wessex to expand its territory. Wulfhere was defeated by King Æscwine of Wessex and eventually died later that year.[2]

During the reign of King Offa, whose reign was considered the most prosperous and the peak of the kingdom's power,[3] the king ordered the construction of a linear military fortification to define the western border of Mercia,[4] which later came to be known as Offa's Dyke.[5]

Counties[]

The Kingdom of Mercia was comprised of six counties (shires) and one semi-autonomous city. Each county was led by an Ealdorman, who was appointed by the King.
